Velich Chardonnay Tiglat 2023 is a newly arrived Austrian Chardonnay from Burgenland, made from vines with an unusual history: planted in 1959, they were mistakenly bought as Pinot Blanc but turned out to be Chardonnay. The wine helped bring Weingut Velich international recognition; “Tiglat” is an old local term for a small part of a vineyard.

Tasting Notes
A current tasting note for the 2023 vintage is not yet available. A note for the 2015 vintage described a deep straw-yellow colour and a layered, evolving bouquet of golden apple, ripe pineapple, orange peel, white flowers and honey, with a hint of Grand Marnier. These notes refer to the earlier vintage and may not reflect the 2023 wine.

For a Chardonnay in this style, consider serving it with roast chicken, grilled fish, shellfish or dishes with a lightly creamy sauce. Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C. Decanting is not essential, though a short period of air in the glass may help the wine open up; the 2015 tasting note suggested that its aromas developed with exposure to air.
