Description
Velenosi Rosso Piceno Superiore Roggio del Filare 2020 is a rich, characterful red from the rolling hills of Italy’s Marche region, crafted as the flagship expression of Rosso Piceno. This cuvée showcases a meticulous selection of Montepulciano and Sangiovese, designed to capture the fullest potential of the terroir and the estate’s most ambitious winemaking. First released with the 1993 vintage, Roggio del Filare has become Velenosi’s “ace in the deck” – the wine that consistently proves how elegant, complex and ageworthy Rosso Piceno can be.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Roggio del Filare 2020 presents a deep, luminous ruby red with garnet highlights at the rim, reflecting both concentration and refinement. The nose is immediately expressive and polished, offering precise aromas of ripe cherries, red plum and wild berries, layered with floral hints of violet and rose, delicate notes of sweet spice, and a touch of fine French oak that suggests vanilla, cocoa and a gentle smokiness.
On the palate, this wine is broad, supple and enveloping, with a generous core of juicy red and dark fruit framed by silky yet persistent tannins. The interplay between vibrant Sangiovese acidity and the structure of Montepulciano creates a beautifully balanced profile: ripe cherries, redcurrant and blackberry meld with nuances of licorice, tobacco, and well-integrated oak. The finish is long, harmonious and savory, with a lingering echo of fruit and spice that invites another sip. Enjoyable now with a short decant, the 2020 vintage has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years from vintage in good cellar conditions.
Production
Roggio del Filare is born from carefully tended vineyards in the heart of Marche, where hillside exposures, calcareous-clay soils and a Mediterranean climate with Adriatic influences allow Montepulciano and Sangiovese to ripen slowly and evenly. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimum maturity, with rigorous selection to retain only the finest bunches for this top cuvée. In the cellar, a long maceration on the skins extracts color, aroma and tannin, followed by fermentation under temperature control to preserve freshness and precision. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, where it gains additional complexity, texture and aromatic finesse without overwhelming the purity of fruit that defines Rosso Piceno Superiore.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile yet serious food wine, ideally suited to rich Italian dishes and hearty, flavor-packed cuisine. Pair it with slow-cooked ragù over pappardelle, grilled lamb chops, roast beef, game birds, or aged cheeses such as Pecorino and Parmesan. It also complements mushroom-based dishes, truffle pasta and wood-fired pizzas with cured meats. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); decanting for 45–60 minutes before serving will help the wine open up fully and showcase its layered bouquet and polished texture.
Producer
Founded in 1984 in Ascoli Piceno, Velenosi has grown from a small, visionary project into one of the most dynamic and respected producers in Italy’s Marche region. The estate’s philosophy has always been to unite traditional local varieties with modern, quality-focused winemaking, elevating appellations like Rosso Piceno to new heights of recognition. Roggio del Filare, first released with the 1993 harvest, quickly became Velenosi’s signature wine and a benchmark for the denomination, regularly earning critical acclaim and helping to put Marche reds on the map for wine lovers seeking character, elegance and value from central Italy.
