Description
Vecchie Terre di Montefili Bruno di Rocca 2017 is a distinctly Tuscan expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, shaped by the high-altitude vineyards of Montefili. This is not an international-style blockbuster, but a refined, site-driven red that marries Cabernet’s structure with the freshness and tension of its cool hillside origins. Old vines add an extra layer of depth, giving the wine a unique identity that’s both powerful and effortlessly elegant.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Bruno di Rocca shows a deep, concentrated ruby color with subtle garnet flashes toward the rim, hinting at its evolution. The nose is complex and inviting, with aromas of dark cherry, blackcurrant and plum interwoven with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite and a gentle echo of dried herbs and spice.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet poised, with a firm Cabernet backbone wrapped in velvety tannins. Ripe black fruit is lifted by vivid acidity, a direct reflection of the vineyard’s altitude and cooler soils, giving the wine both energy and length. Layers of cassis, wild berries, pencil shavings and a touch of cocoa unfold gradually, supported by a long, savory finish. While already harmonious and approachable, the combination of structure, freshness and depth suggests very good aging potential over the next 8–12 years, during which the tannins will further integrate and the tertiary notes will become more pronounced.
Production
The Bruno di Rocca is sourced from old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon planted on the hills of Montefili in the heart of Tuscany, where altitude and stony, cool soils collaborate to create naturally low yields and concentrated fruit. The vines are carefully tended and harvested by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy clusters are brought to the cellar. In the winery, the grapes are gently crushed and fermented in temperature-controlled conditions to preserve aromatic purity, followed by a patient maturation in oak, which adds complexity and polish without overwhelming the wine’s distinctive Montefili character. The approach is focused on expressing terroir: structure and softness from old vines, balanced by the vibrant freshness that the elevation and lean soils provide.
Food & Serving
This Tuscan Cabernet Sauvignon is a superb partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops, braised beef, game, and aged hard cheeses like pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano. It also pairs beautifully with slow-cooked ragù, roasted root vegetables and earthy mushroom dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show both its fruit and nuance; decanting for 1–2 hours will help the aromatics open and soften the tannins, especially in its younger years.
