Description
From the sun‑drenched vineyards of Manduria in Apulia, the Varvaglione Cosimo Varvaglione Collezione Privata Primitivo di Manduria Old Vines 2020 is anything but “just another Primitivo.” Sourced exclusively from carefully selected old vines and crafted as part of the family’s private collection, this is an opulent, dark-fruited red that showcases the full potential of Primitivo in its historic homeland. Extended aging in French and American oak barrels adds depth, polish, and complexity, turning this into a standout bottle for lovers of rich, powerful Italian reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Primitivo is intensely deep ruby, bordering on inky, with a viscous, slow-moving curtain of legs that hints at both concentration and ripeness. The nose is immediately expressive and generous: ripe red and black summer fruits leap from the glass—think preserved dark cherries, blackcurrant jelly, and mixed berry compote—layered with notes of dried plum, sweet baking spices, vanilla, and cocoa.
On the palate, it is full-bodied, velvety, and richly textured, with a mouthfilling core of dark cherry, blackcurrant, stewed berries, and prune. These fruit tones are wrapped in nuances of sweet oak, chocolate, pipe tobacco, and subtle balsamic richness, complemented by hints of sage, rosemary, and a touch of cracked black pepper on the long, warming finish. Tannins are ripe and smooth, adding structure without harshness, while the balanced acidity keeps the wine from feeling heavy. Enjoyable now for its lush, hedonistic profile, it also has the stuffing to evolve gracefully for another 5–8 years, gaining even more tertiary notes of leather, dried herbs, and tobacco.
Production
The fruit for this Collezione Privata is sourced from old-vine Primitivo parcels in the Manduria area of Apulia, where hot, dry summers, cooling breezes from the Adriatic and Ionian seas, and predominantly calcareous and clay-limestone soils produce naturally concentrated, low-yielding grapes. The vines are harvested strictly by hand at optimal ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard to ensure only the best clusters are used. After gentle crushing and a temperature-controlled fermentation to extract color, aroma, and supple tannins, the young wine is transferred to a mix of French and American oak barriques for an extended period of maturation. This lengthy barrel aging polishes the texture, integrates the oak, and layers in notes of vanilla, spice, tobacco, and cocoa that harmonize with the intense fruit core.
Food & Serving
This powerful Primitivo di Manduria shines alongside robust, flavor-packed dishes. Pair it with slow-braised beef or lamb shanks, grilled ribeye, ossobuco, or rich ragù over pappardelle. It also works beautifully with aromatic Mediterranean cuisine—think herb-crusted lamb, roasted vegetables with rosemary and thyme, spicy sausages, or aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (61–64°F) to highlight its aromatics without emphasizing the alcohol. Decanting for 30–60 minutes before serving is recommended to let the wine open up fully and soften its youthful power.
