Description
Van Volxem Gottesfuss GG 2022 is a powerful, dry Saar Riesling from one of the Mosel’s most revered steep-slope sites. Crafted from old vines in the historic Gottesfuss vineyard, this Grosses Gewächs (GG) combines intensity, depth and a distinctive slate-driven character. It is a wine for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate structured, ageworthy Riesling with real pedigree.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Gottesfuss GG 2022 shows a bright, pale straw-yellow hue with green reflections, hinting at both freshness and concentration. The nose is precise and finely etched, opening with cool slate minerality, subtle smoky notes and delicate spice, followed by classic Saar Riesling aromas of citrus zest, white peach, green apple and hints of lime blossom.
On the palate, the wine is dense, mouthfilling and surprisingly creamy for a Saar Riesling, reflecting the warmth and dryness of the 2022 vintage. Juicy stone fruit, ripe citrus and a touch of exotic fruit are wrapped in a firm, slate-infused structure, giving both grip and length. There is a certain youthful weight and seriousness at this stage, with the mineral backbone and acidity promising greater harmony as it matures. While it may currently show a bit more power than polish compared to some cooler vintages, the underlying structure and depth suggest very good aging potential over the next 10–15 years, gaining complexity and finesse with time in bottle.
Production
The Gottesfuss vineyard is a legendary Saar steep slope, composed primarily of weathered Devonian slate that stores heat and imparts a distinctive smoky, spicy minerality to the wines. Old Riesling vines (Alte Reben) with naturally low yields dig deep into this poor, stony soil, concentrating flavor while retaining vibrant acidity. Harvesting is done by hand on the precipitous terraces to ensure optimal selection of perfectly ripe, healthy grapes. In the cellar, Van Volxem follows a deliberately traditional, low-intervention approach: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and extended maturation on the lees in large, neutral oak and stainless steel. This method preserves the purity of fruit, emphasizes the character of the Gottesfuss terroir and yields a dry Grosses Gewächs of notable structure and longevity.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Riesling that pairs beautifully with refined, flavorful dishes: think grilled or roasted sea bass, turbot or hake, scallops, lightly spiced Asian cuisine, sushi and sashimi, or poultry in delicate cream and herb sauces. It also works well with veal, pork tenderloin, and savory vegetarian dishes featuring root vegetables, fennel or mushrooms. Serve at 9–11°C to balance freshness and texture. Young bottles benefit from 1–2 hours in a decanter to open the nose and soften the wine’s initial weight and structure; with a few years of bottle age, a brief splash decant is sufficient to let the slatey, spicy nuances fully emerge.
Producer
Van Volxem is one of the star estates of the Saar, a historic tributary of the Mosel renowned for its razor-sharp, mineral-driven Rieslings. The winery’s origins date back to the 19th century, when it was already considered among the leading addresses in the region, supplying top restaurants and fine wine merchants across Europe. Revitalized in the late 20th and early 21st century with a strong focus on old-vine, steep-slope vineyards and traditional craftsmanship, Van Volxem has helped spearhead the modern renaissance of dry German Riesling. Their Grosses Gewächs bottlings from grand cru sites such as Gottesfuss are widely regarded as benchmarks for the Saar, repeatedly earning high critical acclaim and cementing the estate’s status as a reference producer in the Mosel region.
