Description

Van Volxem Bockstein GG 2021 is a dry, single-vineyard Riesling from one of the Mosel’s most storied slopes, crafted in the estate’s precise yet generous house style. Sourced from old vines in the famed Ockfener Bockstein, it marries laser-like freshness with impressive depth and concentration. This Grosses Gewächs (GG) represents the top tier of German dry Riesling and showcases why Bockstein has long been revered among connoisseurs.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Bockstein GG shines a pale, crystalline lemon-yellow with subtle green reflections, hinting at both youth and intensity. The nose is strikingly pure and finely etched: white currants, white peach flesh and cool citrus are layered with riper nuances of juicy yellow melon. A bright, almost “electric” lemon thread runs through the aromas, giving an impression of clarity, precision and lift. On the palate, the wine is taut yet generous, combining concentration and elegance in equal measure. A vibrant line of citrus – think lemon zest and preserved lemon – drives the wine forward with great energy, supported by 8.4 g/L residual sugar perfectly balanced by a bracing 9.2 g/L of acidity. The texture is vertical and focused rather than broad, with a stony, mineral backbone and a long, saline finish that recalls pure, freshly squeezed lemon over cool wet stone. Already thrilling in its youth, this 2021 has excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–15 years, gaining more texture, spice and smoky minerality while retaining its precise core.

Production
The Bockstein GG 2021 is sourced from 40–50-year-old Riesling vines in select parcels of the Ockfener Bockstein, including the lieu-dit Herrenberg and an unnamed plot adjacent to Zickelberg. These parcels lie on steep, slate-rich slopes oriented east and west rather than purely south, promoting long, slow ripening and preserving intense acidity, aromatic nuance and finesse. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal physiological ripeness to maintain purity and sort out any imperfections. In the cellar, Van Volxem works with a gentle, quality-focused philosophy: careful pressing, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and maturation on fine lees in large traditional vessels help build texture and complexity while keeping the wine resolutely dry and precise. The result is a Grosses Gewächs that captures both the distinctive slate-driven minerality and the refined, almost crystalline character of top Mosel dry Riesling.

Food & Serving
This Bockstein GG is a superb gastronomic white, particularly well-suited to refined, subtly flavored dishes. Think sashimi or crudo, steamed white fish with citrus and herbs, scallops, lobster with beurre blanc, or delicately spiced Asian cuisine such as sushi, Thai dishes with lime and lemongrass, or Vietnamese seafood. It also pairs beautifully with fine poultry, veal in light cream sauces, and fresh goat or soft cow’s milk cheeses. Serve at 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its precision and aromatic detail. Decanting for 30–60 minutes in its youth is recommended to allow the wine to open up fully and reveal its layered fruit and slatey minerality.

Producer
Van Volxem is one of the leading estates in the Saar, a historic tributary of the Mosel, with roots dating back to the 19th century when it was already counted among the region’s most prestigious producers. After a major revival under Roman Niewodniczanski in the early 2000s, the estate has become a reference for dry and off-dry Rieslings that combine intensity, elegance and terroir expression. Working almost exclusively with steep, slate-laden vineyards such as Scharzhofberger, Gottesfuß and Bockstein, Van Volxem has played a key role in re-establishing the Saar as a world-class source of Riesling. Their Grosses Gewächs bottlings are regularly acclaimed by international critics and collectors, cementing the estate’s reputation as a benchmark for modern, terroir-driven German Riesling.
