Description
Van Volxem Altenberg Alte Reben GG 2022 in magnum format captures the Saar’s finely etched elegance in a deeply expressive dry Riesling. Sourced from old vines on the fabled Altenberg vineyard, this Grosses Gewächs combines crystalline precision with remarkable depth and aging potential. A benchmark Mosel-Saar Riesling, it bridges classic stony minerality with the ripeness and clarity of the outstanding 2022 vintage.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a pale lemon color with green reflections, hinting at both youth and vibrancy. The nose opens with fine, pure aromas of white peach and nectarine, subtly framed by citrus zest, white flowers, and a cool, smoky slate minerality. There’s a sense of lift and focus, with nothing heavy or overt – just a precise, aromatic clarity.
On the palate, it is fresh, taut, and mouthwatering, with a bright, crystalline acidity that cuts through the concentrated fruit. Juicy stone fruit and citrus unfold over a backbone of salty, slate-driven minerality, while the texture is rounded and elegant without losing its razor-sharp definition. The finish is long, slightly gripping and delicately drying, showing a fine phenolic structure that underlines its dry Grosses Gewächs style and serious aging frame. In magnum, this 2022 has excellent cellaring potential and will evolve gracefully for 10–20 years, gaining more complexity, depth, and tertiary notes over time.
Production
The Altenberg vineyard in the Saar (Mosel region) is renowned for its steep, slate-rich slopes, which yield Rieslings of striking aromatics and mineral tension. Old vines (Alte Reben) with deep root systems tap into the subsoil, concentrating flavor while naturally limiting yields. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in multiple passes to ensure optimal ripeness and perfect fruit selection. In the cellar, Van Volxem favors a gentle, low-intervention approach: whole clusters are carefully pressed, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts is carried out in stainless steel and/or large traditional casks, and the wine is matured on its fine lees to build texture and nuance without masking the purity of site and grape. The result is a dry Grosses Gewächs that is both powerful and precise, clearly expressing Saar terroir.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile gastronomic Riesling that shines with refined dishes. Pair it with delicately prepared seafood such as turbot, sole, scallops, or sashimi, as well as shellfish, grilled prawns, and crab. It also works beautifully with white asparagus, fine poultry, veal, and lightly spiced Asian cuisine, particularly dishes featuring ginger, lemongrass, or citrus. Creamy sauces or subtly truffled dishes are lifted by its acidity and mineral backbone. Serve at 9–11°C (48–52°F) to accentuate its freshness and precision. Decanting for 30–60 minutes, especially in its youth and in magnum format, helps the wine open up aromatically and reveal its full range of nuance.
