Description

Van Volxem Altenberg Alte Reben GG 2021 is a shining example of dry, Saar Riesling from one of Germany’s most historic steep-slope vineyards. Sourced from old vines (“Alte Reben”) in the famed Kanzemer Altenberg, this Grosses Gewächs combines exotic fruit richness with razor-sharp precision. It’s a wine that captures both the exuberance of the 2021 vintage and the timeless elegance of one of the Mosel-Saar region’s grandest sites.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, pale straw-yellow colour with greenish reflections, hinting at both youthful energy and depth. The nose is intensely expressive and layered: tropical notes of passion fruit, pineapple and ripe mango come to the fore, wrapped in nuances of citrus zest, white peach, crushed slate and a gentle herbal lift. On the palate, the Altenberg Alte Reben GG is at once juicy and precise. The attack is surprisingly succulent, overflowing with pure, concentrated fruit and a sense of effortless abundance. Yet beneath this generosity runs a firm, linear backbone of acidity that keeps everything tightly focused and mouthwatering from start to finish. The texture is sleek and taut, with an almost electric vibrancy and a long, mineral-driven finish that leaves a saline, stony echo. Built on old-vine concentration and fine structure, this 2021 has excellent aging potential; it will gain complexity and nuance over 10–15 years or more, while already offering immense pleasure in its youth.

Production
Kanzemer Altenberg is one of the Saar’s steepest and most dramatic vineyards, with slopes approaching 60–70% and a south to south-west exposure that captures maximum sunlight in this cool valley. The soils are dominated by weathered Devonian slate, which stores heat and imparts a marked mineral and saline character to the wines, while the old vines dig deep for water and nutrients, naturally limiting yields and concentrating flavour. Harvest at Van Volxem is typically done by hand in several passes (selective picking), ensuring only optimally ripe, healthy Riesling grapes from the oldest parcels are chosen for the Altenberg Alte Reben GG. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and often undergoes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, usually in large, traditional oak casks and/or stainless steel at controlled temperatures. The wine is then left on its fine lees for an extended period to build texture and complexity before bottling as a dry Grosses Gewächs of remarkable finesse and intensity.

Food & Serving
This dry, powerful yet finely etched Riesling is a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with refined seafood dishes such as turbot, halibut or scallops, as well as citrus-glazed salmon, sashimi, or ceviche, where its acidity and tropical notes shine. It is equally at home alongside roasted poultry, veal in light cream or citrus-based sauces, and delicately spiced Asian cuisine—think Thai or Vietnamese dishes with lemongrass, ginger and coriander. Mature hard cheeses and aged goat’s cheese also complement its mineral backbone. Serve at 9–11°C, slightly cooler for aperitif use and closer to 11°C at the table to reveal its full aromatic spectrum. A short decant of 30–45 minutes for young bottles is recommended to allow the wine’s fruit, slate-driven minerality and subtle complexity to fully unfold.

Producer
Van Volxem is based in Wiltingen on the Saar, a prestigious sub-region of the Mosel renowned for its steep slate vineyards and long-lived Rieslings. The estate’s roots go back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when its best parcels were already recognized among the top sites of Europe and its wines featured on the lists of leading restaurants and royal courts. Revitalized in the late 20th century, Van Volxem has focused on reclaiming old, often neglected grand cru vineyards such as Scharzhofberg, Gottesfuß and Kanzemer Altenberg, working almost exclusively with low-yielding old vines on steep slopes and practicing meticulous, quality-driven viticulture. Today, Van Volxem is seen as one of the standard-bearers of dry Saar Riesling, earning high critical acclaim and playing a key role in re-establishing the region’s historical reputation for profound, terroir-driven wines.
