Description
Valpanera Sauvignon Aquileia 2023 is a vibrant Italian white that showcases the pure, fragrant side of Sauvignon Blanc from the cool, breezy plains of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Sourced from vineyards near the ancient Roman town of Aquileia, it combines aromatic intensity with polished elegance and a distinctly Mediterranean character. This is a wine that highlights how Friuli has become one of Italy’s benchmark regions for expressive, finely tuned whites.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Valpanera Sauvignon Aquileia 2023 shows a bright, pale straw color with greenish highlights, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose is immediately lifted and precise, offering notes of citrus zest, grapefruit, lime peel and fresh-cut grass, layered with hints of gooseberry, green apple, elderflower and a touch of aromatic herbs.
On the palate, the wine is crisp, medium-bodied and beautifully focused, with lively acidity driving flavors of lemon, ripe lime, white peach and crunchy green fruit. Subtle mineral tones and a delicate saline edge add complexity and length, while the finish is clean, refreshing and pleasantly persistent. Enjoyed in its youth for maximum brightness, this vintage will drink best over the next 2–3 years, gaining a bit of roundness and complexity in bottle without losing its signature freshness.
Production
Valpanera’s Sauvignon vineyards lie in the Aquileia area of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where alluvial, gravelly and sandy soils, combined with proximity to the Adriatic Sea and cool breezes from the Alps, create an ideal microclimate for aromatic white varieties. Grapes are typically harvested in the cool hours of early morning to preserve delicate aromas and natural acidity. After gentle pressing, the must is cold-settled and fermented at controlled low temperatures in stainless steel to lock in freshness and varietal character. The wine then rests on fine lees for a short period, enhancing texture and aromatic complexity while maintaining a clean, modern profile without the influence of oak.
Food & Serving
This Sauvignon Blanc is a natural match for seafood and light, fragrant dishes: think grilled prawns, steamed mussels, seared scallops, sushi, ceviche or simple grilled white fish with herbs and lemon. It also pairs beautifully with fresh goat cheese, asparagus risotto, vegetable tempura, bruschetta with tomatoes and basil, or salads featuring citrus and herbs. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) for optimum expression of its aromatics. Decanting is not necessary; simply open and pour, allowing the wine a few minutes in the glass to fully unfold its bouquet.
