Description
Valiano Chianti Classico Riserva Poggio Teo 2021 is a refined expression of Sangiovese from one of Chianti Classico’s most characterful hillside sites. This Riserva captures the depth, elegance and energy of the Poggio Teo cru, delivering a wine that feels both authentically Tuscan and impressively polished. Crafted with a strong focus on sustainable viticulture, it offers a modern take on a historic appellation without losing its roots. The unique selling point of Poggio Teo lies in its single-vineyard identity: a carefully selected hillside parcel that consistently produces concentrated, finely structured fruit. Its distinguishing features are a vibrant core of red cherry and floral notes, framed by savoury Tuscan herbs, polished tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. As a Chianti Classico Riserva, it stands in the lineage of one of Italy’s most important wine styles, reflecting centuries of Sangiovese cultivation in the hills between Florence and Siena, while benefiting from today’s attention to precision and sustainability.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Poggio Teo Riserva shows a deep, luminous ruby colour with garnet highlights at the rim, signalling both youth and underlying structure. The nose is immediately expressive, with pure red cherry and wild strawberry layered over violet, dried rose petals and hints of blood orange. Subtle notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, sweet spice and a touch of graphite emerge with air, adding complexity without overwhelming the fruit.
On the palate, this is a poised and focused Sangiovese, medium to full-bodied with a juicy, mouth-watering core of red and black cherry, ripe plum and a hint of cranberry. Classic Chianti Classico notes of dried herbs, savoury spice, leather and a gentle earthiness unfold across a long, elegant finish. The tannins are firm yet finely grained, supported by vibrant acidity that keeps the wine fresh and food-friendly. While already approachable with some aeration, the structure and balance suggest very good aging potential: expect it to develop added tertiary complexity—leather, truffle, dried flowers—over the next 8–12 years, depending on storage conditions.
Production
Poggio Teo comes from estate vineyards in the heart of Chianti Classico, where Sangiovese thrives on well-drained, stony soils rich in galestro and alberese. The elevation and marked diurnal temperature swings help preserve acidity and aromatic finesse, while the sun-exposed slopes ensure full phenolic ripeness. Grapes are harvested selectively, often in multiple passes to pick only optimally ripe clusters, and transported quickly to the cellar to maintain freshness. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vessels to capture bright fruit and fine tannin, followed by an extended maceration to build structure and complexity. The wine is then matured in a combination of traditional large casks and smaller oak barrels, allowing it to integrate tannins and develop aromatic depth while retaining the purity of Sangiovese and the distinctive character of the Poggio Teo cru. Throughout, sustainable and environmentally conscious practices guide both vineyard work and cellar decisions.
Food & Serving
This Chianti Classico Riserva is a natural partner for classic Tuscan cuisine and hearty Mediterranean dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled lamb chops with rosemary, porcini risotto, wild boar ragù over pappardelle, or aged pecorino and other firm, nutty cheeses. It also works beautifully with roast chicken, duck, or oven-baked vegetable dishes with herbs and olive oil. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F). Decanting for 45–60 minutes will help the wine open up, especially in its youth, allowing the floral and savoury notes to emerge and the tannins to soften slightly. Use a medium to large Burgundy or Chianti-style glass to highlight the aromatics and the wine’s elegant texture.
