Description

Val di Suga Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Lago 2019 is a single-vineyard Brunello that deliberately looks back to a more traditional era in Montalcino. Revived after many years, this historic cru is crafted in the spirit of the great Brunellos made before small barriques and high-tech cellars changed the landscape. It offers an authentic, almost old-school interpretation of Sangiovese Grosso, with a focus on purity, elegance and terroir expression over overt power or oak.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Vigna del Lago 2019 shows a luminous ruby core with garnet reflections at the rim, typical of classically styled Brunello. The nose is refined and layered: wild cherry, dried rose petals and blood orange peel mingle with notes of tobacco leaf, underbrush, sweet spices and a touch of balsamic and mineral tones that speak of its cooler site. On the palate, this is more about finesse than sheer weight. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with juicy red berry fruit, sour cherry and pomegranate framed by lively acidity and finely etched tannins. Hints of tea leaf, dried herbs, liquorice and subtle earthy tones add complexity on a long, savoury finish. Still youthful, the 2019 has the structure to age gracefully for 12–20 years, gradually gaining more tertiary notes of leather, dried flowers and truffle while maintaining its vibrant backbone.

Production
Vigna del Lago is a historic vineyard on the cooler northern side of Montalcino, close to a small lake that moderates temperatures and extends the growing season. The soils are a mix of clay, marl and galestro (fractured schist), which naturally limit yields and favour depth and aromatic lift in Sangiovese Grosso. Grapes are harvested by hand with strict selection in the vineyard and again in the cellar to retain only perfectly healthy, ripe bunches. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with traditional, relatively long maceration on the skins to gently extract colour, tannin and aromatics. Aging is carried out in large-format oak casks rather than small barriques, echoing the classic Brunello style and allowing the vineyard character to take centre stage, with minimal influence from new wood.

Food & Serving
This Brunello’s elegant structure and savoury profile make it a natural partner for refined Tuscan-inspired dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef or veal shank, roast lamb with herbs, or game birds with porcini mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with aged Pecorino, Parmigiano Reggiano and truffle-inflected dishes. Serve at 17–18°C (around 62–64°F) in large Burgundy or Brunello stems. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help the wine open up and soften the tannins; with additional bottle age, a shorter decant or gentle splash in the carafe is sufficient.

Producer
Val di Suga is one of Montalcino’s respected estates, known in particular for its rare position of owning vineyards on different sides of the appellation, each with its own distinct expression of Sangiovese Grosso. Under the ownership of the Angelini group, the winery has combined deep local roots with a steady, quality-focused evolution. Vigna del Lago is one of Val di Suga’s historic crus, emblematic of the cooler northern sector of Montalcino and long prized for its finesse and aromatic precision. By reintroducing this wine in a more traditional style, Val di Suga underscores its role as a custodian of classic Brunello, balancing contemporary precision with a clear respect for the region’s heritage.
