Description
Val di Suga Brunello di Montalcino Poggio al Granchio 2018 is a single-vineyard expression from one of Montalcino’s most dramatic and prized sites. This is Brunello with a distinctively cool, mineral edge, shaped by altitude, morning sun and ancient marly soils. It offers a refined, terroir-driven take on Sangiovese Grosso that balances depth, tension and elegance in equal measure. Poggio al Granchio sits in a narrow valley on the south-eastern ridge of Montalcino, facing the famed abbey of Sant’Antimo and the looming presence of Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano revered since Etruscan times. The vineyard’s high elevation, marl-rich soils and strong climatic influence from Monte Amiata give this Brunello its hallmark precision, freshness and finely etched structure, distinguishing it from the more opulent styles further south in the appellation.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Poggio al Granchio shows a luminous, deep garnet core with ruby highlights at the rim, clear and vibrant, with slow-forming, elegant tears hinting at concentration and finesse.
The nose is refined and layered: wild cherries, redcurrant and pomegranate lead, followed by notes of dried rose petals, blood orange peel, and hints of sweet tobacco. With air, more complex nuances emerge—Mediterranean herbs, licorice, graphite and a delicate ferrous, almost volcanic minerality that speaks directly of its high-altitude, marl-rich site.
On the palate, this Brunello is poised and focused rather than heavy. Tart cherry and crunchy red plum are wrapped in fine-grained tannins and a line of vibrant acidity that carries the wine gracefully across the palate. Subtle notes of balsamic, cedar, dried thyme and black tea develop with each sip, while the mineral backbone adds both tension and length. The finish is long, savory and mouthwatering, with lingering echoes of cherry, spice and stone.
The 2018 vintage here offers immediate charm but is built to evolve. It is already approachable with a bit of aeration, yet the structure and acidity suggest an aging potential of 12–18 years from vintage in a good cellar, during which the fruit will meld further into the wine’s earthy, truffle and leather-driven complexity.
Production
Poggio al Granchio is a high-altitude, amphitheatre-like vineyard on the south-eastern slopes of Montalcino, descending towards Sant’Antimo and directly influenced by Monte Amiata. The site is kissed by the morning sun, ensuring slow, even ripening, and is rooted in soils rich in marl—calcareous clay with a high mineral content—particularly prized for giving Brunello both aromatic finesse and structural precision. The cooler exposures and steady mountain breezes from Monte Amiata preserve acidity and fragrance in the Sangiovese Grosso grapes, even in warmer years. Harvest is typically done by hand, parcel by parcel, to select perfectly ripe and healthy clusters. In the cellar, Val di Suga vinifies Poggio al Granchio separately to preserve its singular identity: a careful, temperature-controlled fermentation with extended maceration on the skins extracts colour, tannin and aromatics without excess harshness. The wine is then aged in large oak (often traditional Slavonian botti and/or large-format casks) for several years, followed by bottle aging, allowing the vineyard’s mineral and floral nuances to integrate with the wine’s structural depth before release.
Food & Serving
This Brunello’s balance of acidity, fine tannins and savory depth makes it a superb partner for refined Tuscan-inspired cuisine. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic, game birds, braised beef, or wild mushroom risotto. Aged Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano and truffled cheeses also pair beautifully, as do dishes featuring porcini, sage and grilled vegetables. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours before serving is recommended in the wine’s youth to open the aromatics and soften the tannins; with additional bottle age, a gentle 30–45 minute decant is usually sufficient.
Producer
Val di Suga, part of the Angelini group, has become one of the key names in Montalcino, known for its pioneering focus on single-vineyard Brunello. Unlike many estates that rely on a single block or broad blends, Val di Suga cultivates three distinct crus around the Montalcino hill, with Poggio al Granchio representing the cool, mineral-driven, south-eastern face. Founded in the late 20th century and steadily expanded under the Angelini family, the estate has played a significant role in showing how dramatically terroir can shape Sangiovese Grosso within the relatively small Brunello zone. Val di Suga’s crus, including Poggio al Granchio, are frequently highlighted by critics and collectors for their precision, age-worthiness and clear expression of place, reinforcing the producer’s reputation as a benchmark for site-specific Brunello di Montalcino.
