Description
Trotanoy 2022 is a powerful, deeply structured red from one of Pomerol’s most storied estates, crafted in a vintage that naturally delivered richness and intensity. This is a muscular, sun‑kissed Bordeaux that marries hedonistic fruit with serious tannic backbone and longevity. In 2022, Trotanoy stands out within the Mouiex portfolio as the wine carrying the greatest structural weight, underlining its reputation as one of the appellation’s most age‑worthy reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trotanoy 2022 shows a dense, opaque ruby to garnet hue with a vivid rim that hints at its youthful energy. The nose is immediately seductive: sweet blackcurrant, baked plum and black cherry are layered with dark chocolate, warm spice, and a creamy thread of new oak, evolving with air into notes of dried violet, graphite and a touch of raisined fruit.
On the palate, this is full‑bodied, concentrated and firmly built, with a core of ripe black fruit wrapped in powerful yet refined tannins. Flavors of cassis, black plum and blackcurrant liqueur are intertwined with cocoa, roasted coffee, and a subtle, savory minerality typical of top Pomerol. The finish is long, warm and slightly rosin‑ and raisin‑toned, leaving lingering notes of dark fruit and spice. This 2022 is structured for the long haul: it will benefit from at least 8–10 years of cellaring and should evolve gracefully for two to three decades in a good cellar.
Production
Château Trotanoy lies on Pomerol’s famed plateau in Bordeaux, where a patchwork of gravelly clay and iron‑rich subsoils produces Merlot of exceptional depth, often complemented by a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. The 2022 vintage was marked by warmth and abundant sunshine, concentrating flavor and tannin in the berries while the estate’s well‑drained yet moisture‑retentive soils helped preserve balance. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small parcels to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection. Vinification takes place in temperature‑controlled vats, with gentle extraction to capture both the opulence and structure of the fruit, followed by élevage in high‑quality French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, to add further complexity, polish and aging potential.
Food & Serving
Trotanoy 2022 is a natural partner for richly flavored, refined dishes such as roasted lamb with herbs, dry‑aged ribeye, duck breast with a red‑wine reduction, or slow‑braised beef cheeks. It also shines alongside truffle dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmesan, which echo its earthy depth and savory nuances. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F); if opened in its youth, decant for 2–3 hours to allow the tannins to soften and the aromatics to unfurl. In more mature bottles, a gentle 45–60 minute decant is sufficient to reveal the wine’s complexity without sacrificing delicacy.
Producer
Château Trotanoy is one of Pomerol’s historic and most revered estates, with records of viticulture dating back to the 18th century on what was once known as “Trop Ennui” – a nod to the challenging but exceptional terroir that demands careful work yet yields remarkable wines. Now owned and managed by Établissements Jean‑Pierre Moueix, the property has become a benchmark for classically styled, long‑lived Pomerol, sitting alongside the region’s top names in terms of prestige and critical acclaim. Trotanoy is celebrated for its combination of power, depth and finesse, regularly producing wines that are counted among the finest on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, particularly in strong vintages such as 2022.
