Description
Trotanoy 2021 is a refined expression of one of Pomerol’s most revered terroirs, offering both power and immediate charm in a cooler, classic Bordeaux vintage. While it stands as the most muscular and structured wine in the Mouiex portfolio in 2021, it is surprisingly supple by Trotanoy’s own standards, making it accessible relatively early without sacrificing depth or longevity. This vintage captures the estate’s historic style—rich, dark-fruited and complex—framed by the elegance and freshness that characterize 2021 on Bordeaux’s Right Bank.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trotanoy 2021 shows a deep, vibrant ruby to garnet hue, with excellent clarity and intensity that hints at both concentration and refinement. The nose is layered and expressive, opening with dark cherries, ripe plums and black berries, interwoven with sweet earth, licorice and a subtle espresso roast note. Underneath, there’s a quiet mineral undertone and a gentle floral lift that adds complexity.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a broad, generous attack and a creamy core of dark fruit. The texture is particularly striking: the tannins are sweet, fine-grained and almost powdery, asserting themselves gently on the long, persistent finish rather than dominating it. The structure is firm but polished, supported by fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively and precise. While already harmonious and charming in youth, Trotanoy 2021 clearly has the architecture to develop further; expect it to drink well after a few years of cellaring and to evolve gracefully over 15–25 years, gaining complexity in its earthy, truffle and tobacco-driven nuances.
Production
Trotanoy lies on Pomerol’s famed plateau, on a rare mix of deep clay and gravel with streaks of iron-rich ‘crasse de fer’—a terroir that naturally yields wines of profound density and character. The vineyard is dominated by Merlot, with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, all cultivated with meticulous, low-yield viticulture to express the site’s full individuality. Harvesting is carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal ripeness and preserve berry integrity, particularly important in a more delicate vintage like 2021. After careful sorting, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by élevage in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), where the wine ages on fine lees. This thoughtful, traditional vinification allows Trotanoy 2021 to marry structure and richness with the vintage’s natural finesse and freshness.
Food & Serving
Trotanoy 2021 is a superb partner for refined, savory dishes that echo its depth and earthiness. Think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, duck breast with a red wine reduction, beef tenderloin, or slow-braised veal cheeks. It also shines alongside truffle-infused dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to emphasize its aromatic complexity and silky texture. In its youth, decanting for 1–2 hours will help the wine open up and soften the tannins; as it gains bottle age, a shorter decant primarily for sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Trotanoy is one of Pomerol’s great historic estates, long celebrated for producing wines of remarkable power, depth and longevity from its exceptional clay and gravel soils. Its origins date back to the 18th century, and since the mid-20th century it has been under the stewardship of Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, the renowned family behind several of the Right Bank’s most iconic properties. Trotanoy is widely regarded as one of the appellation’s benchmark wines, often mentioned in the same breath as Pétrus and other Pomerol legends. Across vintages and changing conditions, the estate has consistently delivered profound, ageworthy reds that embody the soul of Pomerol, and the 2021 vintage continues this legacy with a more classically styled, gracefully structured expression.
