Description
Trotanoy 2014 is a benchmark Pomerol from one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, offering remarkable depth, precision and longevity. This is a Right Bank classic: richly textured, yet defined by tension, minerality and a sense of effortless power. In a vintage that rewarded careful vineyard work, Trotanoy stands out as one of the most complete and thrilling wines produced on the plateau of Pomerol.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trotanoy 2014 shows a deep, opaque garnet core with a narrow, ruby-tinged rim, signaling both concentration and youthful vigor. The nose is initially restrained, then unfurls with time in the glass into layers of mineral-laced black fruits—blackberry, black cherry and cassis—interlaced with black truffle, graphite, subtle sous-bois, and a touch of cigar box and dark cocoa.
On the palate, the wine is superbly structured, dense and yet impeccably balanced. Silky, finely woven tannins frame a core of pure black fruit, with notes of plum, violets, truffle and a vibrant, almost electric vein of spice and minerality that carries through to a very long, resonant finish. The purity and focus are striking, and while already impressive, this 2014 is built for the cellar. It will reward patience over 15–25 years or more, evolving from powerful and tightly knit in youth to increasingly complex, velvety and tertiary with bottle age.
Production
Château Trotanoy lies on the prized Pomerol plateau, where a complex mosaic of deep clay and gravel soils—particularly the famous dense, iron-rich clay—gives Merlot an exceptional combination of power, aroma and texture. The vineyard, planted primarily to Merlot with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, is farmed with meticulous attention to detail, with low yields and careful green harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, at optimal maturity and sorted rigorously before vinification. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless-steel vats, allowing for a gentle extraction of color, tannin and flavor. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, for around 18–20 months, during which it gains additional structure, complexity and polish without losing its underlying purity of fruit and strong expression of terroir.
Food & Serving
Trotanoy 2014 is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. Think roasted or grilled lamb with rosemary, tournedos Rossini (beef with foie gras and truffle), slow-braised beef short ribs, or game birds such as duck or pigeon. Earthy accompaniments like truffle-infused dishes, wild mushrooms, and root vegetables will echo the wine’s truffley, sous-bois nuances, while aged hard cheeses (Comté, aged Gouda) make for a contemplative pairing. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). In its youth, decanting for 1.5–2 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully open and the structure to soften; as the wine matures, a shorter decant mainly to remove sediment will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Trotanoy is one of Pomerol’s most storied and coveted addresses, with roots reaching back to the 18th century. Its name—derived from the French "trop ennui," roughly meaning "too much trouble"—is a nod to the challenging, heavy clay soils that, paradoxically, give such extraordinary character to the wines. Since 1953, the estate has been under the stewardship of Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, a leading force in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion, renowned for elevating Right Bank Bordeaux to global acclaim. Trotanoy is consistently considered among the top wines of Pomerol, often mentioned in the same breath as the appellation’s most illustrious estates, and the 2014 vintage has been widely praised by critics as one of the standout wines of the year in this prestigious region.
