Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trotanoy 2013 presents a deep garnet core with just a hint of brick at the rim, reflecting its evolution while retaining plenty of color and life. The nose is poised and finely etched rather than opulent, with notes of crushed stone, redcurrant, blackberry, and plum layered over hints of graphite, black truffle, and a whisper of smoke. Subtle touches of dried violets, tobacco leaf, and cocoa emerge with air, giving a sense of quiet complexity. On the palate, this is medium-bodied with admirable depth for the vintage, offering a seamless core of dark red and black fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins. There is more substance and concentration than many 2013s, though the profile remains elegant rather than lush, with a gentle grip that carries the wine across the mid-palate. Black truffle, earthy undertones, and a faint smokiness linger on the finish, joined by a precise, almost mineral freshness. Drinking well now with a short decant, it still has the structure to evolve gracefully for another 10–20 years, developing more tertiary notes of leather, forest floor, and cigar box over time.

Production
Trotanoy lies on one of Pomerol’s most revered terroirs, a mosaic of deep clay, gravel, and iron-rich subsoils (crasse de fer) that naturally limits yields and brings both power and finesse to the Merlot-dominated blend, with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. The vineyard is carefully managed and harvested by hand, with strict sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make it into the cellar—crucial in a cooler, more demanding year like 2013. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, to preserve the character of each plot, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which are new. The aim is not overt oakiness but texture, polish, and integration, resulting in a wine that clearly expresses its Pomerol origins even in a lighter vintage.

Food & Serving
Trotanoy 2013 is a superb partner for classic, savoury dishes that highlight its earthy, truffle-tinged character: think roast lamb with rosemary and garlic, slow-braised beef short ribs, duck breast, or veal with morel cream sauce. It also works beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, truffle risotto, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) to showcase its aromatic detail and structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully open and soften, especially if enjoyed in the next few years; for older bottles closer to peak maturity, a more gentle, shorter decant will suffice.

Its name loosely translates to “too laborious to cultivate,” a nod to the heavy clay soils that are difficult to work, yet capable of producing some of the appellation’s most profound wines. Since 1953, Trotanoy has been under the stewardship of Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, a leading force on Bordeaux’s Right Bank and guardian of several of Pomerol’s top properties.
