Description
Trotanoy 2008 is a superb expression of classic Right Bank Bordeaux, capturing the depth, structure and finesse that have made this estate one of Pomerol’s most revered names. This is a wine that balances power with precision, showing impressive purity of fruit and a sense of restraint that rewards patience in the glass and in the cellar. Considered by many on par with the lauded 2009 and 2010 vintages, the 2008 continues to gain complexity with time.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Trotanoy 2008 reveals a deep, garnet-red core with subtle brick hues emerging at the rim, a sign of graceful evolution. The nose is engaging and precise, opening with raspberry confiture and wild strawberries, then unfolding into layers of dark cherries, dried flowers, hints of cedar and a subtle, almost medicinal edge that adds intrigue and complexity.
On the palate, this is medium-bodied yet intensely focused, with finely woven tannins and a vibrant, crisp acidity that gives the wine a beautiful sense of lift. Red berry fruit is framed by notes of cedar, tar, graphite and a faint earthiness, leading into a long, structured finish marked by freshness and latent power. Already highly enjoyable, the wine continues to improve as it opens in the glass and still has the backbone to evolve gracefully for at least another 10–20 years from now, offering extended drinking pleasure for patient collectors.
Production
Trotanoy lies on some of Pomerol’s most prized terroir, where a mix of clay and gravel soils—rich in iron and famed for their ability to impart both power and finesse—forms the foundation of the wine’s character. The vineyard is planted mainly to Merlot, supported by a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, with low yields carefully maintained through rigorous vineyard work and selective harvesting by hand. In the cellar, traditional Bordeaux vinification is combined with meticulous modern care: gentle extraction to preserve purity of fruit, followed by aging in high-quality French oak barriques, a significant portion of them new, to build structure, complexity and longevity without overwhelming the natural expression of the vineyard.
Food & Serving
Trotanoy 2008 is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes: think roast lamb with garlic and herbs, duck breast with a red wine reduction, beef tenderloin, venison, or slow-braised beef cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with truffle-infused dishes, wild mushroom ragouts and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to show its full aromatic range. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the bouquet to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften, especially if opened on the younger side of its drinking window.
Producer
Château Trotanoy is one of the historic and most admired estates of Pomerol, situated on the Right Bank of Bordeaux and owned by the esteemed Jean-Pierre Moueix family. Dating back to the 18th century, the property’s name—derived from the French for “too tiresome”—refers to the difficult, hard clay soils that, paradoxically, yield wines of remarkable depth, structure and longevity. Over the decades, Trotanoy has earned a reputation as one of Pomerol’s benchmark wines, often rivaling the appellation’s most famous names and consistently praised by critics for its age-worthy, classically styled reds that combine richness with elegance and precision.
