Description
Troplong Mondot 2009 is a powerful, opulent Saint-Émilion that captures the lush, sun‑drenched character of Bordeaux’s outstanding 2009 vintage. This is a hedonistic, ultra-concentrated red crafted for those who love richly textured, deeply flavored wines. Perched on one of the appellation’s highest limestone plateaus, Château Troplong Mondot has long been celebrated for producing some of the most intense and ageworthy wines of the Right Bank, and 2009 is a textbook example of its bold, expressive style.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2009 Troplong Mondot shows a deep, opaque garnet color with a velvety, almost inky core that hints at its concentration and power. The nose is immediately seductive and expansive: aromas of plum jam and black cherry compote are layered with spice cake, potpourri, incense, and exotic spices, alongside subtle notes of cured meat, balsamic, and a touch of smoky richness.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied, super-rich, and almost voluptuous in texture, with a plush, creamy mouthfeel that seems to coat every corner of the palate. Ripe dark fruits—plum, blackberry, and blackcurrant—are intertwined with sweet baking spices, cocoa, and savory undertones, giving impressive complexity and depth. The tannins are abundant yet polished, contributing structure without harshness, and the finish is long, decadent, and layered with spice and dark fruit. While already open and generous, this 2009 still has many years of life ahead; carefully cellared bottles should continue to evolve beautifully for another 10–15 years, gaining further nuance and tertiary complexity.
Production
Château Troplong Mondot is situated on one of Saint-Émilion’s highest points, where a mix of limestone, clay, and chalky soils gives natural concentration and tension to primarily Merlot-based blends, supported by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2009 vintage benefited from a warm, dry growing season, allowing the grapes to reach exceptional ripeness while maintaining balance. Harvesting is traditionally carried out by hand, parcel by parcel, to capture optimal maturity from each plot. In the cellar, Troplong Mondot is known for meticulous sorting, long macerations, and fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, followed by extended aging in a high proportion of new French oak barrels, which adds further texture, spice, and complexity to this already generous wine.
Food & Serving
This 2009 Troplong Mondot is a natural partner for richly flavored, indulgent dishes that can stand up to its power and intensity. Think roasted or grilled lamb, beef ribeye or entrecôte, slow-braised short ribs, venison, duck with dark fruit accents, or truffle-infused dishes; mature hard cheeses like aged Comté or Parmesan also work beautifully. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both its aromatics and structure. Given its concentration and youthfulness for its age, decanting for 1–2 hours is highly recommended to allow the wine to open fully and reveal its full spectrum of aromas and flavors.
Producer
Château Troplong Mondot is one of the most emblematic estates of Saint-Émilion, long classified among the top tier of the appellation and renowned for its distinctive, powerful style. The estate’s history stretches back to the 18th century, but it was in the late 20th and early 21st centuries that Troplong Mondot firmly established itself as a modern benchmark, consistently earning high praise from critics for its dense, ageworthy wines. Its elevated position and exceptional terroir, combined with an unwavering commitment to meticulous vineyard work and precision winemaking, have made Troplong Mondot a reference point for lovers of opulent Right Bank Bordeaux, with vintages like 2009 standing out as particularly iconic.
