Description

Troplong Mondot 2008 is a powerful, classically styled Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most respected estates. Produced from low yields and achieving 14.5% natural alcohol, this is a wine that marries generosity and precision in equal measure. Nominated as a ‘vintage candidate’ in 2008 and widely praised by critics, it stands as one of the standout Right Bank wines of its year, crafted under the stewardship of the late, much-admired owner Christine Valette.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Troplong Mondot 2008 shows a deep, saturated garnet core with just the first hints of brick emerging at the rim, reflecting its evolution in bottle. The nose is intense and layered, with waves of blue and black fruits—blackberry, blueberry and black cherry—interwoven with notes of plum compote, licorice, violets, graphite, and a touch of mocha and sweet spice from high-quality oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied and opulent yet structured, offering a plush texture with ripe, sweet tannins that frame the abundant dark fruit. Flavors of blackcurrant, black plum and blueberry are joined by cocoa, espresso, and a subtle mineral edge typical of the limestone plateau. The finish is long, velvety and persistent, with a lingering impression of dark berries and spice. Already very enjoyable, the 2008 continues to evolve gracefully; well-stored bottles are now in a beautiful drinking window and should remain at their best for at least another 5–10 years.

Production
Troplong Mondot’s vineyards sit on one of the highest points of the Saint-Émilion limestone plateau, with a terroir of clay-limestone and chalk that naturally limits vigor and concentrates flavor. In 2008, yields were kept low at around 41 hectoliters per hectare, ensuring intensity and ripeness, and the wine reached 14.5% natural alcohol without over-extraction. The blend is classic for the estate: roughly 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, hand-harvested at optimal maturity. After careful selection in the winery, the wine was vinified with attention to gentle extraction to preserve fruit purity and texture, then aged in French oak barrels (a significant proportion new), allowing it to develop its signature richness, polished tannins, and layered complexity.

Food & Serving
This 2008 Troplong Mondot is a superb partner for richly flavored dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef ribeye, slow-braised short ribs, duck breast, or game birds. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushroom risotto, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both freshness and depth. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to fully open the bouquet and soften the tannins, especially if the bottle is opened on the younger side of its drinking window.

Producer
Château Troplong Mondot is one of the leading estates of Saint-Émilion, long classified among the region’s top properties. Perched on a prominent limestone plateau overlooking the village, the château has been producing wine since the 19th century, but it was under the guidance of Christine Valette that Troplong Mondot rose to modern prominence. Her commitment to low yields, meticulous vineyard work and a richer, more concentrated style earned the estate international acclaim and consistently strong critical ratings. Today, Troplong Mondot is regarded as a benchmark for powerful yet refined Right Bank Bordeaux, known for wines that combine terroir-driven minerality with depth, longevity and a distinctive house character.
