Travaglini Gattinara Riserva 2021

Travaglini’s Gattinara Riserva 2021 is a single-varietal Nebbiolo from one of northern Piedmont’s most characterful appellations. Made only in selected vintages from old vines, it combines the region’s mineral freshness with the depth and structure expected of a cellar-worthy Riserva.

Tasting Notes
It shows an intense garnet-red colour with characteristic translucency. The concentrated bouquet brings together liquorice and juniper with balsamic hints of sandalwood and toast, followed by blackberry, cherry, preserved fruit and dried flowers.

Production
The grapes come from historic Gattinara vineyards, where vines are around 45–65 years old. Stony soils contribute a mineral edge, while cool breezes and south- to southwest-facing exposures help the Nebbiolo ripen while retaining freshness. After careful bunch selection, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel for around 15–18 days. The wine then matures in large Slavonian oak casks for approximately 40 months, followed by a further 10 months in bottle.

Food & Serving
Its firm yet refined tannins suit game, braised meats and other richly flavoured dishes, as well as well-aged cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C. Decant for about an hour before serving to allow its aromas to open and its structure to soften; older bottles may benefit from gentler handling and a shorter time in the decanter.

Founded in 1958, Travaglini is closely associated with Gattinara and its Nebbiolo-based wines. The estate’s distinctive curved bottle has become an emblem of the producer, whose approach is rooted in local tradition and a stated commitment to sustainable, low-intervention practices. Its Gattinara Riserva is a historic label, made only in the best vintages.
