Description

Tramin Terminum Gewürztraminer Vendemmia Tardiva 2023 is a glorious, golden late-harvest dessert wine from the steep vineyards around Sella–Termeno in Alto Adige. Made from grapes picked in December, it marries extraordinary concentration with surprising finesse, offering a truly contemplative, “meditation” style wine in a half-bottle format (0.375L). Its rarity, painstaking production and remarkable balance of sweetness and freshness make it a standout among the world’s great aromatic dessert wines.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Terminum 2023 shows a deep, luminous golden hue with amber highlights that hint at its late-harvest richness. The nose is intensely expressive and layered: heady rose petals, lychee and ripe tropical fruit weave together with notes of candied orange peel, acacia honey, dried apricot and a touch of sweet baking spice and ginger—classic Gewürztraminer, but turned up several notches in complexity. On the palate, the wine is voluptuous yet poised, with a luscious, silky texture and a cascade of exotic fruit flavors. You’ll find lychee, mango and apricot compote, alongside caramelized citrus, honeycomb and hints of saffron and vanilla. The sweetness is generous but never cloying, thanks to a vibrant, mountain-fresh acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. The finish is very long, echoing floral and spicy notes for minutes. Already irresistible on release, it will easily develop additional complexity over at least 8–10 years, with the producer recommending a minimum of 2–3 years after bottling for peak harmony.

Production
The grapes for Terminum come from selected parcels in the Sella–Termeno area of Trentino–Alto Adige, an elevated, cool-climate zone with steep, well-ventilated slopes. The soils are predominantly limestone and clay with porphyry elements, providing excellent drainage and a distinctive mineral backbone. Gewürztraminer bunches are left on the vine well into December, allowing for natural concentration through late ripening and, in favorable years, the development of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which further intensifies aromas and texture. Harvest is performed entirely by hand, in multiple passes, to pick only the perfectly shriveled, richly flavored berries. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented slowly at controlled temperatures, often in a mix of stainless steel and small oak barrels, with extended maturation on the fine lees to build creaminess and complexity while preserving the grape’s striking aromatics.

Food & Serving
This is a superb partner for rich, flavor-packed dishes and indulgent desserts. Pair it with blue cheeses like Gorgonzola or Roquefort, foie gras, or aged hard cheeses for a thrilling sweet-salty contrast. On the dessert side, it shines with fruit tarts, apricot or apple strudel, crème brûlée, panna cotta or almond-based pastries; it can also work beautifully with mildly spicy Asian dishes that echo Gewürztraminer’s exotic spice profile. Serve well-chilled but not icy, around 10–12 °C (50–54 °F), in small white-wine or dessert-wine glasses to concentrate the bouquet. Decanting is not essential, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving allows the perfumes to fully unfurl.

Producer
Cantina Tramin, founded in 1898 in the village of Termeno (Tramin), is one of Alto Adige’s most respected cooperative wineries and a global reference point for top-quality Gewürztraminer. Bringing together a network of small, dedicated growers farming some of the region’s best-exposed vineyards, the cantina has helped shape the modern identity of Trentino–Alto Adige wines by emphasizing precision, purity and terroir expression. Over the decades, Cantina Tramin has earned numerous national and international accolades—particularly for its aromatic whites and its iconic sweet wines like Terminum—cementing its reputation as a benchmark producer in northern Italy.
