Description
TR Szamorodni 2017 from Tokaj is a beautifully crafted dessert wine that showcases the classic sweetness and vibrant freshness that have made this historic Hungarian region world‑famous. Made predominantly from botrytised Furmint grapes, it balances luscious sugar levels with piercing acidity for a dessert wine that feels rich yet surprisingly lifted. With only 600 half-bottles produced, this is a small-batch, cult release that captures the new generation of Tokaj in a modern, precise style. As a traditional Szamorodni (“as it comes”) wine, it is made from a mix of botrytised and healthy grapes harvested together, echoing centuries-old Tokaj practices. The high natural sugar (143 g/l), modest 11% alcohol, and 7.5 g/l of acidity place it firmly in the great sweet-wine tradition of Tokaj, but with a youthful, contemporary edge.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, TR Szamorodni 2017 shines a deep golden to light amber hue, hinting at concentration and complexity, with slow, generous legs that reflect its sweetness. The nose opens with classic noble rot character: dried apricot, orange peel and candied citrus, layered with notes of acacia honey, quince, baked apple and a touch of saffron and chamomile. Subtle nuances of toasted nuts and warm spice from its Hungarian oak elevage add further depth.
On the palate, the wine is intensely sweet yet beautifully balanced, its 143 g/l of residual sugar kept in perfect check by bracing, zesty acidity. Flavours of apricot jam, honeycomb, marmalade and yellow plum unfold slowly, joined by hints of dried pineapple, fig and a fine, stony minerality from Tokaj’s volcanic soils. The texture is silky and mouth-coating without ever becoming cloying, finishing long, bright and gently spicy. Thanks to its structure and acidity, this Szamorodni has excellent aging potential; it can easily evolve and gain complexity over 10–15 years or more in a good cellar, developing deeper notes of caramel, nut and dried fruit with time.
Production
TR Szamorodni 2017 is sourced from the Palota Vineyard in the village of Tállya, one of Tokaj’s historic crus, rooted in volcanic soils that lend a distinctive mineral tension to the wines. The 15–40 year old vines are farmed organically, with no synthetic pesticides and a strong focus on biodiversity. For this wine, botrytis-affected and healthy grapes (about 90% Furmint and 10% Hárslevelű) were hand-harvested in whole clusters at optimal ripeness. The grapes were gently pressed, and the must was allowed to ferment naturally with indigenous yeasts for 48 hours before being guided to completion. The wine then matured for 18 months in 300-litre Hungarian oak barrels, gaining texture, aromatic complexity and subtle spice. It was bottled in May 2019 and released at the end of 2020, in a tiny production of just 600 half-bottles (37.5 cl).
Food & Serving
This is a versatile dessert wine that excels with richly flavoured, indulgent dishes. Pair it with classic blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Gorgonzola, foie gras terrine or pâté, and decadent desserts based on caramel, stone fruits or citrus. It is also superb with dark chocolate (especially 60–70% cacao), nut-based pastries and pâtisserie, or simply sipped on its own at the end of a meal. Serve slightly chilled, ideally at 10–12°C, in a small white wine or dessert wine glass to focus the aromatics. Decanting is generally not necessary, but opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving allows the wine’s honeyed, botrytised complexity to fully unfurl.
Producer
TR Wines is an ambitious young estate based in Tállya, in the heart of Hungary’s historic Tokaj region, a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its sweet wines since the 17th century. Founded in 2012 by a group of passionate wine enthusiasts, they carefully selected the 3.5-hectare Palota Vineyard after extensive exploration of the area’s volcanic slopes. Farmed organically and moving towards full certification around 2020/21, their vineyards are managed with an emphasis on biodiversity and natural vine resilience, avoiding systemic chemical treatments and relying on contact sprays only. TR Wines represents the new wave of Tokaj: respecting tradition (producing styles such as édés, szamorodni and aszú) while introducing a fresher, lighter-handed approach with less overt oak, more precision, and a clear expression of terroir. Their tiny production and quality-driven philosophy have quickly earned them a cult following among lovers of authentic, handcrafted Tokaj wines.
