Description

Tornatore Etna Bianco Pietrarizzo 2023 is a refined volcanic white from one of Etna’s most prized crus, crafted primarily from the native Carricante grape with a touch of Catarratto. Grown high on the northern slopes of the volcano, this wine captures the striking tension between mineral depth, vibrant citrus, and elegant florality. Pietrarizzo has been regarded by locals for over a century as one of the finest vineyards in the area, and this bottling is a pure expression of that historic site.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Etna Bianco Pietrarizzo 2023 is pale straw with green reflections, signaling freshness and youth. The nose opens with bright citrus—lemon zest, pink grapefruit and tangerine—layered with white flowers, green apple, wild herbs and a distinct smoky, salty minerality typical of volcanic soils. On the palate, the wine is linear and precise, with a lively acidity that drives flavors of citrus, crunchy orchard fruit and subtle stone fruit. The volcanic origin shows in its saline, stony backbone and long, mouthwatering finish, accented by hints of anise and almond. While beautifully vibrant and approachable now, the structure and acidity suggest very good aging potential over the next 5–7 years, during which it will gain complexity, with more honeyed, nutty and tertiary mineral notes.

Production
The Pietrarizzo contrada lies on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, where high altitudes, dramatic day–night temperature swings and ashy, lava-rich soils create ideal conditions for Carricante and a small proportion of Catarratto. Vines tap into deep volcanic layers, producing fruit with naturally high acidity and intense minerality. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to preserve berry integrity and allow strict selection in the vineyard. After gentle pressing, the must is fermented at controlled low temperatures—most often in stainless steel—to emphasize purity and aromatics. The wine then rests on fine lees for a period, adding texture and complexity while retaining the signature freshness and precision of Etna Bianco.

Food & Serving
This Etna Bianco is a natural match for seafood—think crudo, oysters, grilled prawns, or simply prepared white fish with lemon and herbs. It also pairs beautifully with octopus salad, risotto ai frutti di mare, lightly sauced pasta with clams, as well as fresh goat cheese, burrata and vegetable dishes with fennel, citrus or Mediterranean herbs. Serve chilled at around 8–10°C (46–50°F) to highlight its tension and aromatics. A brief 15–20 minutes in the glass or a quick splash-decant can help the wine open up its floral and mineral nuances, especially in its youth.

Producer
Cantine Tornatore is one of the historic family estates on Mount Etna, with roots in Sicilian winegrowing that stretch back generations. Located on the cooler, northern side of the volcano, the estate has been instrumental in showcasing Etna’s potential for refined, terroir-driven wines based on indigenous varieties like Carricante and Nerello Mascalese. By focusing on specific contrade such as Pietrarizzo, Tornatore highlights the unique character of individual sites, helping to elevate Etna’s reputation from local secret to one of Italy’s most exciting and distinctive wine regions. Their wines regularly receive critical acclaim for their clarity of fruit, mineral depth and faithful expression of volcanic terroir.
