Description

Tolpuddle Chardonnay 2024 is a benchmark cool-climate white from Tasmania’s renowned Coal River Valley, crafted in a refined, modern style that rivals top Burgundies. Sourced from a single, windswept vineyard, this wine balances crystalline fruit with flinty complexity and precise acidity. Established in 1988 and now under the stewardship of Shaw + Smith’s Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw, Tolpuddle has quickly become one of Australia’s most sought‑after Chardonnay producers.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2024 Tolpuddle Chardonnay shows a pale straw color with shimmering green hues, signaling both youth and freshness. The nose opens with pure lemon zest, white nectarine, and crunchy pear, layered with hints of grapefruit pith, jasmine, and a distinctive struck‑match, flinty character. Subtle notes of almond meal, crème fraîche, and fine French oak add depth without overwhelming the fruit. On the palate, the wine is tightly coiled yet already expressive, with a vivid line of acidity driving through citrus, stone fruit, and a whisper of white flowers. The texture is sleek and chalky rather than creamy, giving a sense of minerality and tension. Fine, integrated oak frames the wine with notes of hazelnut and subtle spice, leading to a long, saline, mouth‑watering finish. While already enjoyable in its youth for its precision and energy, this Chardonnay has excellent aging potential; expect it to evolve gracefully over 8–12 years, gaining more nougat, brioche, and honeyed complexity while retaining its backbone of freshness.

Production
Tolpuddle Vineyard lies in the Coal River Valley of southern Tasmania, a cool and dry maritime area known for long growing seasons and outstanding acid retention in grapes. The vineyard’s gently sloping sites sit on light silica-over-sandstone soils, which naturally limit yields and enhance concentration and finesse in the fruit. Chardonnay is hand‑picked in small parcels at optimal ripeness to preserve delicacy and natural acidity. Bunches are typically whole‑bunch pressed to juice, which is then fermented predominantly with wild yeasts in fine French oak barrels, a portion of which is new, to build texture and complexity. Aging on lees, with minimal bâtonnage, adds subtle creaminess while maintaining the wine’s taut structure and pure, cool‑climate expression.

Food & Serving
This Tolpuddle Chardonnay 2024 is a versatile partner for refined, seafood‑driven and poultry dishes. It shines with freshly shucked oysters, scallop crudo, grilled lobster with lemon butter, and simply prepared white fish, as well as roast chicken, guinea fowl, or veal in light, creamy sauces. It also pairs beautifully with mushroom risotto, gnocchi in sage butter, and soft, bloomy cheeses like Brie or Camembert. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to bring out both its aromatics and structure. In its youth, a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes can help the wine open up and reveal its full range of citrus, stone fruit, and flinty complexity.

Producer
Tolpuddle Vineyard was planted in 1988 in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley and was acquired in 2011 by Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw, the team behind Shaw + Smith in the Adelaide Hills. Their vision was to craft world‑class, site‑specific Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from one of Australia’s most promising cool‑climate regions. Since then, Tolpuddle has become a reference point for Tasmanian Chardonnay, frequently earning top scores and critical acclaim both domestically and internationally. The estate’s meticulous viticulture, low‑yielding vines, and restrained, terroir‑driven winemaking have cemented Tolpuddle’s status as one of the leading producers not only in Tasmania but in the broader Australian fine‑wine landscape.
