The Sadie Family Swartland Old Vine Series Skerpioen 2024

The Sadie Family’s Skerpioen 2024 is a striking coastal white from the Swartland Old Vine Series, blending Chenin Blanc and Palomino from limestone soils just inland from the sea. Early-picked fruit and the singular maritime character of the site give this wine remarkable precision, saline energy, and a sense of place that has made Skerpioen one of the estate’s most admired wines.

Tasting Notes
Pale and luminous in the glass, Skerpioen 2024 opens with a lifted, ocean-fresh nose of sea spray, crushed oyster shell, citrus peel, and subtle white stone fruit. The Chenin Blanc leads the aromatic profile for now, while the Palomino adds a quiet, mineral edge and an increasingly expressive salty note. The palate is fresh, vibrant, and distinctly maritime, with a chalky limestone grip and a savoury, saline core that carries the wine long and clean. Despite its tension and brightness, there is more mid-palate weight than expected, making this a beautifully balanced white with excellent development potential over the next several years.

Production
Skerpioen comes from old vines planted on limestone-rich soils close to the coast in the Western Cape, where the cool marine influence helps preserve freshness and natural salinity. The 2024 harvest was picked early to capture acidity and precision, and the blend of Chenin Blanc and Palomino is vinified to highlight the site’s chalky texture, oceanic freshness, and nuanced mineral character rather than overt fruit.

Food & Serving
This is an exceptional partner for oysters, grilled prawns, ceviche, shellfish, sushi, and lightly prepared white fish, especially dishes with citrus, herbs, or saline accents. Serve chilled at around 9–11°C, and decanting is generally unnecessary, although a short aeration can help if opening it young.
