Description

The Sadie Family Swartland Old Vine Series Skerpioen 2023 is a striking, site-driven white from the rugged coastal reaches of South Africa’s Western Cape. A field blend of Chenin Blanc and Palomino rooted in pale limestone with a sandy topsoil, it’s crafted to express place above grape variety. This vintage continues the Skerpioen tradition: a tense, saline, ageworthy white that captures the Atlantic-influenced Swartland at its most precise and pure.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Skerpioen 2023 is pale straw to light gold, with a luminous clarity that hints at its coastal freshness. The nose is lifted and detailed, showing waxy Meyer lemon, sea spray and crushed seashells, with subtle notes of green and yellow citrus, a touch of wild herbs and a faint, intriguing hint of latex and lanolin. On the palate, the wine is both vertical and horizontal: piercingly bright in its line of acidity yet texturally broad and mouth-filling. The underripe-picked Chenin lends tension, citrus pith and nervy energy, while the fully ripe Palomino adds a suave, saline roundness and gentle nuttiness. Flavors of lemon peel, salted grapefruit, quince and wet stone glide across the palate, finishing long, savory and chalk-inflected. Skerpioen has an excellent aging potential; over 8–12 years it should gain even more waxy, honeyed and nutty complexity while retaining its mineral backbone.

Production
Sourced from old, dry-farmed vines planted directly into white limestone with a sandy surface layer in Swartland, Skerpioen is a genuine expression of coastal Western Cape terroir: calcareous soils, Atlantic breezes and low-yielding heritage vines. Chenin Blanc and Palomino are interplanted and harvested separately based on optimal ripeness—Chenin on the slightly underripe side for tension, Palomino picked fully ripe and golden for depth and texture. In the cellar, Eben Sadie works with minimal intervention, pressing the grapes gently and allowing native yeasts to conduct fermentation. The wine matures for about 12 months in old acacia and oak barrels, avoiding overt wood influence and preserving the wine’s saline, mineral character and transparent expression of site.

Food & Serving
Skerpioen 2023 is a natural partner for elegant, subtly flavored seafood and mineral-driven dishes. Think oysters, grilled prawns, line-caught white fish, ceviche, or simply prepared scallops, as well as delicately seasoned roast chicken, goat’s cheese, and vegetable dishes featuring fennel, asparagus or artichoke. Serve cool but not too cold, around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow its texture and aromatics to unfurl. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing additional layers of citrus oil, saline nuance and gentle waxiness.

Producer
The Sadie Family Wines, founded by celebrated winemaker Eben Sadie in the late 1990s, is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s benchmark producers and a driving force in the modern Swartland renaissance. Based in the Western Cape, the estate has been instrumental in championing old-vine parcels, often in marginal, wind-swept sites that had long been overlooked. The Old Vine Series, of which Skerpioen is a flagship bottling, showcases these historic vineyards and their unique terroirs through restrained, terroir-first winemaking. International acclaim, consistent critical praise and a loyal global following have cemented The Sadie Family’s reputation as a reference point for fine South African wine.
