Description
The Matsui Whisky Single Malt Sakura Cask is a distinctly Japanese expression that highlights the elegance and subtle aromatic character for which the country’s whiskies are known. Matured in sakura wood, it offers a rare and memorable twist on single malt whisky, bringing a delicate floral dimension that sets it apart from more conventional cask finishes.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a warm amber hue with a refined, polished sheen. The nose is softly floral and gently sweet, with notes that can suggest cherry blossom, vanilla, toasted wood, and light orchard fruit.
On the palate, the whisky is usually smooth and well-balanced, combining delicate sweetness with soft spice, subtle oak, and a graceful floral lift from the sakura cask. The finish is elegant and lingering, with a light woodiness and a whisper of blossom-like perfume. It is best enjoyed relatively young for its freshness and aromatic charm, though it can continue to develop added softness in bottle over time.
Production
This single malt is crafted in Japan and finished in sakura casks, a traditional wood choice that adds a uniquely Japanese aromatic signature to the whisky. The focus is on preserving the distillate’s purity while allowing the cherry wood influence to lend fragrance, texture, and a distinctive sense of place through careful maturation and cask selection.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed neat, with a drop of water if you want to open up the floral and woody aromatics. It also pairs nicely with lightly sweet desserts such as almond tart, white chocolate, or delicately flavored pastries, and works well alongside mild cheeses or dried fruit. Serve at room temperature, and decanting is not necessary.
