In the glass, The Mascot 2019 shows a deep, saturated ruby to purple hue with a vibrant, youthful rim. The nose is generous yet refined, revealing layers of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and plum, lifted by notes of violets, graphite, cedar shavings and subtle baking spices. Hints of dark chocolate, tobacco leaf and crushed rock emerge with air, underscoring the wine’s origin in top hillside sites. On the palate, this Cabernet is structured and polished, with a core of black fruit framed by fine-grained tannins and a lively, integrated acidity. Flavors of cassis, black cherry and blueberry are complemented by notes of espresso, cocoa nibs, pencil shavings and a touch of savory herb. The Mascot is sourced from the younger vines of the Harlan family’s iconic Napa Valley properties, primarily perched on the western hills above Oakville and surrounding AVAs. These elevated sites feature well‑drained, rocky soils and a warm, sunny climate tempered by cool evening breezes, fostering small, concentrated Cabernet berries. Grapes are harvested by hand in small lots, with rigorous selection in both vineyard and winery. Fermentations take place in temperature‑controlled tanks, with careful extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic purity, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new. The result is a wine that reflects the same meticulous viticulture and cellar craft as its illustrious siblings, but presented in a more approachable, earlier‑drinking style.
