Description
Terroir al Limit Arbossar 2017 is a strikingly refined expression of old-vine Carignan from the dramatic slate slopes of Spain’s Priorat. Far from the region’s stereotypically dark, powerful style, this single-vineyard wine leans into lift, fragrance and tension, offering a cooler, more transparent vision of Priorat. Sourced from ancient bush vines on impossibly steep terraces, it captures both the wild Mediterranean landscape and a Burgundian sense of elegance in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Arbossar 2017 shows a luminous, deep garnet-red hue, noticeably brighter and lighter in tone than many classic Priorat reds. The nose is layered and intricate: notes of licorice and violet rise first, followed by cassis, sour cherry and wild plum. With air, more herbal and savory nuances emerge – rosemary, green almond and a subtle green, vegetal edge that gives freshness and complexity, along with hints of mirabelle plum and sloe.
On the palate, the wine is immediately arresting for its finesse and cool-fruited character. Despite its Mediterranean aromatics, the mouthfeel is taut, bright and almost airy, with red and blue fruits supported by a very fine, powdery tannin structure. A vivid, present acidity keeps the Carignan feeling long-limbed and precise, stretching the finish out seemingly without end. Flavors of roasted Padrón peppers, wild herbs and crushed stone weave through the fruit, giving a savory counterpoint to the wine’s elegant profile. While already highly compelling, the balance of tannin, acidity and fruit suggests excellent aging potential over 10–15 years, during which it will gain further complexity and silkiness.
Production
Arbossar comes from a single, steep, north-facing vineyard of very old Carignan bush vines rooted in classic Priorat llicorella (decomposed slate) soils near Torroja del Priorat. These poor, rocky terraces naturally restrict yields, concentrating flavor while the exposure and altitude help preserve freshness and aromatic lift. The grapes are typically farmed organically and biodynamically, then harvested by hand due to the extreme slope of the site. In the cellar, Terroir al Limit works with a minimalist philosophy: whole or mostly whole clusters are gently fermented with native yeasts in concrete or large traditional vessels, with very gentle extraction to safeguard finesse. Aging usually takes place in large, neutral oak foudres or similar large-format containers, emphasizing purity, texture and terroir expression rather than oak imprint.
Food & Serving
This refined Priorat pairs beautifully with dishes that echo its balance of savory depth and bright acidity: think herb-crusted lamb, grilled or roasted poultry, game birds, Iberian pork, or rabbit with Mediterranean herbs. It also works wonderfully alongside roasted vegetables, lentil stews, charcuterie, aged Manchego, and, in a nod to its own flavors, grilled Padrón peppers. Serve at 15–16 °C (59–61 °F) to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the more floral and herbal notes to fully unfold and the tannins to soften.
Producer
Terroir al Limit was founded in the early 2000s and quickly became one of the most influential modern producers in Priorat, pioneering a more terroir-driven, elegant interpretation of the region. Working primarily with old-vine Garnacha and Carignan on steep, historic vineyards, the estate shifted the focus away from heavy extraction and new oak toward a style more reminiscent of fine Burgundy in its transparency and precision. Their meticulous, often biodynamic farming and low-intervention cellar work have helped redefine Priorat’s image from merely powerful to profoundly nuanced. Wines like Arbossar, sourced from singular old-vine sites, have earned Terroir al Limit international acclaim and cemented the estate as a benchmark for finesse and authenticity in the region.
