Made exclusively from old vines in the Calderara Sottana cru, it stands out for its depth, complexity, and layered expression of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a bright, translucent ruby color that hints at its finesse rather than sheer power. The nose is finely detailed, with red cherry, wild strawberry, dried flowers, and Mediterranean herbs, alongside a smoky, mineral edge that reflects Etna’s volcanic soils. On the palate, it is refined and complex, with fresh red fruit, savory spice, and a delicate but persistent earthy character. The wine is often praised for its balance between brightness and structure, and while it is already expressive young, it also has the concentration and nuance to develop beautifully with time in bottle.

Calderara Sottana is a single-vineyard wine made only from vines aged approximately 50 to 100 years, giving the wine both concentration and authenticity. The site’s volcanic soils and Etna’s high-altitude conditions contribute to a naturally fresh, mineral style, while the old vines help deliver a broad spectrum of aromas and flavors. The grapes are typically harvested by hand and vinified with a focus on preserving purity, elegance, and site expression.

This is a versatile food wine that pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled mushrooms, game birds, braised veal, or Sicilian dishes with tomato, eggplant, and herbs. Serve it slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 30–60 minutes if drinking young to let the aromatics open up.
