Description
Terraviva Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Luì 2020 is a vibrant, characterful red that captures the sun, sea breeze and rolling hills of Abruzzo in every glass. Made from 100% Montepulciano, it offers an honest, artisanal expression of this beloved Italian grape, with both freshness and depth. The “Luì” cuvée shows the more approachable, fruit-forward side of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo while still retaining the structure and authenticity that have made the region a classic.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Luì 2020 shows a deep, luminous ruby-red colour with purple highlights at the rim. The nose is generous and inviting, layered with ripe dark cherries, blackberries and plum, lifted by hints of violet, Mediterranean herbs, licorice and a touch of spice.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with juicy, dark-fruit flavours, supported by fine, ripe tannins and a lively, food-friendly acidity. Notes of black cherry, wild berries and a subtle earthy-mineral undertone build toward a supple, savoury finish, with a gentle echo of cocoa and dried herbs. It is drinking beautifully now for its youthful energy and purity of fruit, yet has the structure to evolve gracefully over the next 3–5 years.
Production
Tenuta Terraviva’s vineyards lie on the coastal hills of Abruzzo, where the Montepulciano grape benefits from a classic Adriatic influence: warm days, cooling sea breezes and marked diurnal shifts that preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. The vines grow in a mix of clay and limestone soils, which naturally limit yields and enhance concentration and minerality in the grapes. Harvest is typically done by hand to ensure only the healthiest, fully ripe clusters are selected. In the cellar, the focus is on gentle, low-intervention vinification: the grapes are destemmed, fermented with careful temperature control to preserve fruit purity, and then matured in a combination of inert vessels and/or large, neutral containers to soften tannins without masking the grape’s character, resulting in a Montepulciano that is both expressive and impeccably balanced.
Food & Serving
This Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a natural partner for classic Italian comfort dishes: think tomato-based pastas, hearty lasagne, wood-fired pizza, grilled sausages and roasted or braised meats. It also works beautifully with cured meats, aged pecorino, hard cheeses and rustic vegetable stews. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight its fruit and aromatics; a brief decant of 30 minutes can help the wine open up and reveal additional spice and floral notes, especially if enjoyed in its youth.
Producer
Tenuta Terraviva is a quality-focused estate in Abruzzo, dedicated to expressing the identity of its coastal hills through native varieties, above all Montepulciano. Over the years, the winery has embraced sustainable, often organic-leaning practices in the vineyard, working with low yields and careful farming to capture the region’s natural energy and maritime freshness. Terraviva has earned a reputation among Italian wine lovers for producing wines that are both authentic and accessible, bridging traditional Abruzzese character with a modern, clean style. This combination has made the estate a respected name in the region and a reliable source of characterful, terroir-driven wines like Luì.
