Description
Terralsole Grappa Brunello Riserva is a refined, small-production Italian grappa distilled from the pomace of Brunello di Montalcino, one of Tuscany’s most revered wines. Crafted by the artisan team at Terralsole, this 0.5 L Riserva bottling captures the character of Sangiovese Grosso in a spirit that is both expressive and remarkably smooth. Aged to develop greater depth and complexity, it’s an elegant after-dinner companion for those who appreciate premium, terroir-driven spirits.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Terralsole Grappa Brunello Riserva shows a luminous, pale golden hue, a subtle nod to its time in wood. The nose is inviting and refined, with aromas of dried cherry, orange peel and potpourri layered over notes of toasted almond, vanilla, and a gentle floral lift that recalls violets and wild herbs.
On the palate, this Riserva is supple yet precise, showing the structure and personality of Brunello in spirit form. Expect flavors of red berry compote, baked apple, and dried fig, wrapped in hints of honey, spice box, and a touch of cocoa. The texture is silky for a grappa, with well-integrated warmth and a long, graceful finish that lingers with notes of nuts, spice, and a whisper of oak. Enjoy it now for its balance of fruit and complexity; with a few years of further bottle rest, it will gain additional harmony and softness, though it’s designed to be enjoyed rather than cellared long-term.
Production
This grappa is distilled from the pomace of Brunello di Montalcino—Sangiovese Grosso grapes grown on Terralsole’s sun-drenched, south-facing vineyards in the rolling hills of Tuscany. The estate’s philosophy is that great wine—and by extension, great grappa—is born in the vineyard, so the grapes are carefully tended and harvested by hand to ensure healthy, intensely flavored fruit. After the Brunello is pressed, the fresh pomace is quickly transported for distillation to preserve its aromatic richness. The spirit is then aged as a Riserva in wood, allowing it to gain color, complexity, and textural finesse while maintaining the varietal purity and elegance of Sangiovese Grosso.
Food & Serving
Terralsole Grappa Brunello Riserva is ideal as a contemplative digestif, best enjoyed neat in a tulip-shaped grappa or spirits glass. Serve slightly chilled or just below room temperature, around 14–18°C (57–64°F), to highlight its aromatic detail without emphasizing the alcohol. A brief rest in the glass—5 to 10 minutes—acts much like gentle decanting, allowing the bouquet to open beautifully. It pairs wonderfully with dark chocolate, hazelnut or almond biscotti, aged hard cheeses, or a simple plate of dried fruits and nuts. It’s also an excellent match for a quiet moment after a rich Tuscan-inspired meal.
Producer
Terralsole, whose name translates to something akin to “sun-drenched earth” or “the field that faces the sun,” was founded in 1996 in the heart of Montalcino. Owned and run by a passionately dedicated winemaker and his equally artistic wife, the estate reflects their dual love of fine wine and visual art, a connection clearly seen in their label designs, which are true miniature paintings. Terralsole has built a reputation for characterful, hand-crafted Brunello di Montalcino, always guided by the motto that great wine is made in the vineyard, not in the cellar. By extending this philosophy to their grappa, they’ve created a Brunello-derived spirit that showcases both the quality of their Sangiovese Grosso and their standing as a thoughtful, terroir-focused producer in one of Italy’s most prestigious wine regions.
