Production
The Teo Costa “Monroj” Barolo 2019 is born in the hilly landscapes of Piemonte, where calcareous-clay and marl soils, combined with good elevation and excellent drainage, provide ideal conditions for Nebbiolo. Steep, well-exposed slopes around the Barolo area allow for slow, even ripening, preserving the grape’s natural acidity and aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically hand-harvested to ensure careful selection of bunches at optimal ripeness. In the cellar, traditional Barolo methods prevail: extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin, and aroma, followed by a long fermentation. The wine is then matured in large wooden casks or a combination of large botti and older barrels, allowing Nebbiolo’s character to shine while adding gentle spice and structure, before further refinement in bottle prior to release.

This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes and the hearty cuisine of northern Italy. Pair it with braised beef, ossobuco, roasted lamb, or game such as venison and wild boar. It also shines alongside truffle dishes, mushroom risotto, aged hard cheeses (such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino), and dishes featuring porcini or slow-cooked ragù. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression, ideally after 1–3 hours of decanting in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the bouquet. Older bottles can be decanted more gently to remove sediment and allowed to evolve slowly in the glass.

Today, Teo Costa is guided by Roberto Costa, a prominent figure in the region and president of the winegrowers’ association “I Vignaioli di Castellinaldo.” He has dedicated his efforts to enhancing the reputation of Castellinaldo as a distinctive subzone for quality wines, particularly Barbera d’Alba, while also producing classic Piemontese icons such as Barolo. The estate is known for its commitment to expressing terroir, careful vineyard work, and a balance of tradition and modern precision in the cellar, making Teo Costa a respected name in Piemonte’s dynamic wine landscape.
