Description

Teo Costa Barbera d'Alba Castellinald 2018 Magnum is a generous, characterful Barbera from the rolling hills surrounding the village of Castellinaldo in Piemonte. Bottled in magnum, it’s designed for the table – ideal for sharing, aging and showcasing the full personality of this classic Piedmontese grape. Crafted to please the quality-conscious wine lover, it balances power, freshness and authenticity in a truly food-friendly style. This Barbera d'Alba stands out for its concentration, vibrant acidity and fine balance between fruit and structure – a profile that has earned Teo Costa multiple international awards. Castellinaldo is a recognized sub-zone with strict production rules, and this wine reflects that disciplined approach: low yields, careful vineyard work and a style that highlights Barbera’s purity. With over a century of family history in Castellinaldo, the Costa family has helped elevate the area’s reputation, with Roberto Costa playing a leading role in promoting Castellinaldo Barbera on the international stage.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Castellinald Barbera d'Alba shows a deep ruby core with a lively purple rim, signaling both concentration and youthfulness even in magnum format. The color is intense yet bright, hinting at the grape’s natural vibrancy. The nose is expressive and inviting, with aromas of ripe black cherry, dark plum and red currant layered over notes of violet, sweet spice and a subtle hint of licorice. Gentle undertones of cedar, cocoa and a touch of earthy minerality add complexity without dominating the fresh fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet agile, with Barbera’s hallmark acidity cutting through the rich fruit, giving the wine lift and precision. Juicy flavors of cherries and blackberries are supported by fine, ripe tannins and a well-judged use of oak, which adds structure and a faint whisper of vanilla and toast. The finish is long, savory and mouthwatering, leaving impressions of dark fruit and spice. Thanks to the magnum format and the natural acidity of Barbera, this 2018 has very good aging potential. While already approachable and enjoyable now for its generous fruit, it should continue to evolve gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining further complexity, silkier texture and more integrated tertiary notes.

Production
The Barbera d'Alba Castellinald is sourced from the undulating hills around Castellinaldo in Piemonte, where clay-limestone soils, good drainage and sun-exposed slopes provide ideal conditions for Barbera. The area benefits from a continental climate tempered by nearby Alpine influences, with warm days and cool nights helping to preserve acidity and aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure only healthy, perfectly ripe clusters are selected. In the cellar, the wine is vinified with temperature-controlled fermentation to extract color, aroma and fine tannin without harshness. It is then matured – often in a combination of large traditional vessels and/or barrels – to harmonize the fruit, soften the structure and add subtle layers of spice and complexity, while keeping the Barbera character front and center.

Food & Serving
This Barbera d'Alba is a highly versatile food wine, particularly well suited to rich, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with classic Piedmontese cuisine such as tajarin with ragù, braised veal, osso buco, sausages and polenta, as well as roasted or grilled red meats and game birds. It also works wonderfully with aged hard cheeses, mushroom-based dishes and truffle-inflected recipes, where its acidity and depth cut through richness. Serve at 16–18°C to highlight both freshness and complexity. Decanting for 30–60 minutes prior to serving is recommended, especially in its youth and in magnum format, to allow the aromas to open and the tannins to fully relax.

Producer
The Costa family has been tending the hillsides around the picturesque village of Castellinaldo for well over a century, building a deep connection to the land and its Barbera vines. Teo Costa is firmly rooted in this heritage, combining tradition with a thoughtful, quality-driven approach to winemaking. Roberto Costa, a key figure in the estate, serves as president of the local growers’ association “I Vignaioli di Castellinaldo,” and has dedicated himself to establishing Castellinaldo as a recognized and respected sub-zone for Barbera d'Alba. Under his guidance, Teo Costa has garnered numerous international awards for its concentrated, distinctive Barberas, contributing significantly to the reputation of Castellinaldo and reinforcing Piemonte’s status as one of Italy’s great red wine regions.
