Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 2020

Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia 2020 is one of Italy’s most iconic fine wines and the benchmark for Cabernet-based wines from Tuscany. Produced in the coastal Bolgheri region, it combines the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the aromatic finesse of Cabernet Franc, offering both immediate appeal and remarkable long-term ageing potential. The 2020 vintage is supplied in its original wooden case when purchasing six bottles.

Tasting Notes
The wine displays a saturated ruby-red colour with deep violet and almost blue hues. Its intense bouquet reveals ripe blackcurrants, blackberries and dark berries alongside cedar, tobacco and refined toasted oak. With bottle age, the oak notes will integrate further and the aromatic profile will gain additional complexity. On the palate, Sassicaia 2020 is remarkably concentrated yet cool and composed, with dense dark fruit, vibrant acidity and finely polished tannins. Its balance of extract, structure and freshness makes it approachable in its youth, while also providing the foundation for several decades of development. Under ideal cellaring conditions, it should mature beautifully over at least 20 years, with its finest drinking window likely beginning after around 10 years of ageing.

Production
The vineyards of Tenuta San Guido lie in the maritime climate of Bolgheri, where coastal breezes, abundant sunlight and gravelly, well-drained soils create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The grapes are carefully harvested at optimal ripeness and vinified with a focus on preserving freshness, concentration and varietal definition. The wine is matured in French oak barriques before further bottle ageing, allowing its fruit, tannins and toasted notes to develop harmony and complexity.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the wine to come gradually to temperature. Sassicaia 2020 is a natural match for richly flavoured dishes such as roasted or grilled beef, venison, lamb, game birds and braised meats, as well as mature hard cheeses. It can be enjoyed young after decanting for around two hours, while older bottles may benefit from more careful handling and shorter decanting to preserve their delicacy.

Tenuta San Guido is the historic estate behind Sassicaia, a wine created by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta in the 1940s and first released commercially in 1968. Inspired by the great Cabernet wines of Bordeaux, he demonstrated that the coastal hills of Bolgheri could produce wines of exceptional elegance, longevity and international stature. Sassicaia’s success played a defining role in establishing Bolgheri as one of Italy’s premier wine regions and led to the creation of the dedicated Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC.
