Description

Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2023 is the elegant, approachable sibling to the iconic Sassicaia, crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot on the Tuscan coast. This is a modern, polished red that balances ripe fruit with structure, offering a glimpse into Bolgheri’s world‑class terroir at a more accessible level. Named after Guidalberto della Gherardesca, an ancestor of the estate’s founder, it pays tribute to the estate’s pioneering spirit while showcasing a fresher, earlier‑drinking expression of the domaine.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Guidalberto 2023 typically shows a deep, vivid ruby colour with youthful purple highlights, hinting at its energy and concentration. The nose is inviting and refined, with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and wild berries layered with notes of violet, tobacco leaf, cedar, pencil shavings and a gentle touch of sweet spice and vanilla from barrel aging. On the palate, the wine is medium to full‑bodied, sleek and beautifully linear, with a core of dark cherry, cassis and blackberry framed by fine, polished tannins. Merlot adds softness and juiciness, while Cabernet Sauvignon contributes backbone, length and a subtle graphite note. Fresh acidity keeps everything vibrant, leading to a long, graceful finish with hints of cocoa, dried herbs and a saline, maritime lift. While crafted to be enjoyable in its youth, especially within 2–4 years of the vintage, it has the structure to develop additional complexity over 8–10 years in a good cellar.

Production
Guidalberto is produced from vineyards surrounding Tenuta San Guido’s estate near Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, where the proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea moderates temperatures and ensures excellent diurnal range. The soils are a mix of gravel, clay and sandy loam, echoing the classic Bordeaux inspiration yet with a distinctly Mediterranean character. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, often by hand, to preserve berry integrity and sort quality in the vineyard and cellar. After gentle crushing and fermentation in temperature‑controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine undergoes maceration to extract colour, aroma and fine tannins. It is then aged in a selection of mostly French, with some American, oak barriques for around a year before blending, fining and bottling, yielding a wine that marries purity of fruit with subtle, well‑integrated oak.

Food & Serving
Guidalberto 2023 is a versatile food wine that shines alongside classic Tuscan and Mediterranean dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops, tagliata di manzo, roast pork with herbs, game birds, and rich pasta dishes such as pappardelle with ragù di cinghiale (wild boar) or mushroom‑based sauces. It also complements aged Pecorino, Parmigiano‑Reggiano and earthy, truffle‑inflected dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression. Younger bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to open up the bouquet and soften the tannins, while more mature bottles can be served after a brief splash decant to remove any sediment.

Producer
Tenuta San Guido is one of Italy’s most revered estates, located in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, and is best known as the birthplace of Sassicaia, the original “Super Tuscan” that redefined Italian fine wine in the late 20th century. Founded by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the estate pioneered the planting of Bordeaux varieties on coastal Tuscan soils, challenging the dominance of traditional blends and DOC regulations of the time. Guidalberto was introduced in the early 2000s as a way to express the estate’s terroir through a blend with a higher proportion of Merlot, offering a more immediately approachable style than Sassicaia while still reflecting Tenuta San Guido’s meticulous viticulture and restrained, classical winemaking. Today, the estate stands as a benchmark not only for Bolgheri, but for modern Italian wine as a whole.
