Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia 2023 is one of Italy’s most iconic red wines, and the only wine in the country with its own DOC dedicated to a single label: Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC. A true benchmark for elegance and structure, it reflects the vision of Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who began pursuing a Bordeaux-inspired wine on this Tuscan coastal estate in the 1920s.

Tasting Notes
Sassicaia 2023 is expected to show a deep, vivid ruby hue with remarkable clarity and intensity. The nose is typically layered and refined, with Cabernet Sauvignon-led aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedar, herbs, and graphite, while Cabernet Franc adds lift, floral tones, and a subtle spicy edge. On the palate, it is known for its balance of concentration and finesse, combining polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, structured finish. This is a wine that can be enjoyed with some aeration in its youth, but it also has excellent aging potential, evolving beautifully over many years into greater complexity and nuance.

Production
The grapes come from Tenuta San Guido’s distinctive Bolgheri vineyards on the Etruscan coast of Maremma, where the soils are stony, calcareous, and notoriously poor in fertility—ideal conditions for producing deeply expressive, refined Cabernet. The harvest takes place in August, and vinification is carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel with around two weeks of skin maceration, supported by pump-overs and délestage to extract color, structure, and precision. The wine then matures for 2 years in oak barrels before resting in bottle for 6 months.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for fine red meats, roast lamb, game, truffle dishes, and rich Tuscan cuisine such as bistecca alla Fiorentina or pappardelle with wild boar ragù. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young, to allow the wine’s aromatics and structure to fully open.
