Tasting Notes
In the glass, Lodovico 2020 shows a deep, almost opaque ruby core with youthful purple reflections, signaling concentration and intensity. The nose opens slowly at first, then unfurls with layers of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry, and dark plum, interwoven with graphite, cedar, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, and hints of cocoa and exotic spice. Subtle notes of violets and crushed stone add a lifted, elegant edge. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and tightly knit, with a dense core of dark fruit framed by polished yet authoritative tannins. Cabernet Franc’s signature freshness and aromatic detail shine through, giving lift to the rich Merlot and structure to the supporting Bordeaux varieties. Flavors of black fruits, licorice, espresso, and savory herbs flow into a long, mineral-driven finish with a saline touch from the nearby Tyrrhenian coast. Production
Tenuta di Biserno lies in the coastal hills of Upper Maremma, near Bibbona and Bolgheri, where maritime breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea meet well-drained soils of clay, sand, and gravel with significant limestone and stones—an ideal setting for Bordeaux varieties. Grapes for Lodovico are sourced from the estate’s best parcels, often the highest and rockiest sites, which naturally yield small, intensely flavored berries. Harvest is typically carried out by hand in multiple passes, ensuring only perfectly ripe clusters are selected. In the cellar, the varieties (dominated by Cabernet Franc, with Merlot and small proportions of other Bordeaux grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot) are vinified separately in stainless steel or temperature-controlled tanks to preserve purity of fruit. After fermentation and maceration tailored to each parcel, the wine is aged in French oak barriques—largely new—for an extended period, followed by further time in bottle before release, allowing the powerful structure to integrate and the wine’s complexity to harmonize.

Located in the coastal Tuscan area of Bibbona, just north of Bolgheri, the estate was conceived from the outset as a specialized site for Bordeaux varieties, particularly Cabernet Franc, thanks to its stony, rolling hills and strong maritime influence.
