Description
Taylor’s Vintage Port 2000 is a benchmark bottling from one of the Douro’s most respected names, offering immense concentration, depth, and the kind of structure that promises a long life ahead. Built primarily from Touriga Nacional and sourced from Taylor’s famed estates, it reflects the house style at its most powerful and age-worthy, with a reputation for improving beautifully over decades.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it is intensely dark—almost opaque—with a blue-purple-black core that signals its youthful power. The nose is striking and layered, with graphite, blackberry liqueur, crème de cassis, smoke, and a vivid floral lift emerging over time.
On the palate, the wine is densely packed and impressively structured, balancing ripe sweetness with firm tannins and fresh acidity. There is remarkable concentration and extract, giving the wine a brooding, muscular feel now, but with the balance to evolve gracefully for many years. While already impressive, its best years are still ahead, with a drinking window that can extend well into the coming decades.
Production
Taylor’s Vintage Port 2000 comes from the Douro Valley in Portugal, with fruit drawn mainly from the house’s top vineyards, especially Quinta de Vargellas and Quinta da Terra Feita. These steep schist soils, warm days, and cool river-influenced nights help produce grapes with exceptional ripeness, concentration, and natural acidity.
The harvest is typically carried out by hand to ensure only the best fruit is selected. Fermentation is traditionally short and intense, allowing Taylor’s to capture vivid fruit, color, and tannic structure before fortification with grape spirit preserves the wine’s depth and sweetness. The result is a classic vintage port built for long-term aging.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with blue cheese, dark chocolate desserts, or simply on its own after dinner, Taylor’s Vintage Port 2000 pairs especially well with rich, salty, or bitter-sweet flavors. Serve slightly cool, around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for several hours before serving to allow the wine to open and shed any sediment.
Producer
Taylor’s, formally Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman, is one of the oldest and most celebrated port houses, with origins dating back to 1692. Over the centuries it has built a formidable reputation for producing some of the finest vintage ports in the Douro, known for their concentration, structure, and exceptional longevity. Its legendary vineyards, particularly Quinta de Vargellas, have played a major role in establishing Taylor’s as a reference point for classic vintage port.
