Description
Taylor’s Vintage Port 1970 is a classic expression of one of the Douro Valley’s most respected Port houses, presented here in a convenient 37.5 cl half bottle. Celebrated for its depth, structure and remarkable longevity, this historic vintage reflects Taylor’s house style: powerful, concentrated and built to evolve over many decades. Robert Parker described the 1970 as a “fabulous” and broodingly dense Vintage Port with outstanding future potential.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-garnet in colour, with the brick-red and amber hues that develop with extended bottle age. The nose is likely to show mature aromas of black fruits, plum, dried berries and spice, complemented by notes of cedar, cocoa, leather and subtle nutty complexity. On the palate, it combines concentrated fruit with firm tannins, refreshing acidity and the characteristic warmth and sweetness of Vintage Port. Its long, persistent finish reflects the impressive structure for which Taylor’s is renowned.
At more than five decades old, this is a mature Port that should be approached as a developed, complex wine rather than a youthful, fruit-driven style. Properly stored bottles may continue to offer pleasure, although the condition of an individual bottle and its fill level are especially important with a wine of this age.
Production
Taylor’s Vintage Port is produced from grapes grown in the Douro Valley, one of the world’s historic fortified-wine regions. The fruit comes from Taylor’s three renowned estates—Quinta de Vargellas, Quinta de Terra Feita and Quinta do Junco—all classified in the Douro’s highest Group A category. Their contrasting microclimates contribute layers of complexity and power. The 1970 vintage was made in the traditional Vintage Port style, with fermentation followed by fortification with grape spirit to preserve the wine’s natural sweetness, fruit character and ability to mature in bottle.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly cool, at approximately 14–16°C, to highlight the wine’s freshness and balance. Decant carefully before serving to separate any sediment and allow the mature aromas to open; older Vintage Port generally benefits from gentle aeration rather than prolonged exposure. It is a natural partner for mature blue cheeses, Stilton, strong hard cheeses and desserts based on dark chocolate, dried fruit or nuts. A small glass also makes an excellent contemplative conclusion to a special meal.
Producer
Taylor Fladgate & Yeatman, commonly known as Taylor’s, has been producing Port for more than 300 years, with roots dating back to 1692. The house is considered one of the leading names in Vintage Port and has played an important role in the development of the category, including purchasing its own Douro vineyards in 1744, creating the first Single-Quinta Vintage Port and pioneering Late Bottled Vintage Port in 1970. Its three principal estates—Quinta de Vargellas, Quinta de Terra Feita and Quinta do Junco—are central to the house’s reputation for powerful, ageworthy wines. Taylor’s has been compared by leading critics, including Robert Parker, with the great estates of Bordeaux.
