Description
Taylor’s Fladgate Single Harvest 1863 is an exceptionally rare tawny Port from one of the Douro’s most historic houses, offering a direct link to the early days of the port trade. Drawn from a single harvest and preserved for well over a century, it stands as both a collector’s treasure and a remarkable expression of aged fortified wine.
Tasting Notes
Deep and luminous in the glass, the wine shows a developed olive-toned rim that speaks to its extraordinary age. The bouquet is deeply evolved and layered, with notes typical of mature tawny Port: dried fruits, caramelised nuts, old wood, spice, and lifted oxidative complexity, all carried with impressive concentration.
On the palate, it is dense, viscous, and richly textured, with remarkable sweetness balanced by mature acidity and a long, resonant finish. Despite its age, it retains a sense of vitality and structure, making it a wine to savour slowly. Its ageing potential is largely a matter of preservation now, but in ideal cellaring conditions it will continue to hold for many years to come.
Production
Sourced from the Douro and matured for generations in cask, this single-harvest Port reflects the traditional fortified-wine methods that define Taylor’s style. The wine was kept in just two casks in a secure warehouse in Vila Nova de Gaia, where slow oxidation, evaporation, and long cask ageing shaped its extraordinary character over time.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed in small pours at cool room temperature, this Port is ideal after dinner alongside blue cheese, Roquefort, aged hard cheeses, nut tarts, caramel desserts, or even served on its own as a contemplative glass. Decanting is not usually necessary, but a gentle pour is recommended to avoid any sediment that may have formed over time.
Producer
Taylor’s Fladgate is one of the most respected names in Port, with a long history in the Douro and a reputation for producing some of the finest vintage and aged tawny Ports. The house is widely recognised for its craftsmanship, longevity, and role in defining the prestige category of classic Port wines.
