Description

Sylvain Pataille Marsannay En Clemengeots 2022 is a precise, terroir-driven Burgundy that shows just how exciting Marsannay has become in the hands of top growers. Crafted from Pinot Noir grown in the En Clemengeots lieu-dit, this wine balances pure red fruit with a finely etched structure and real mineral drive. As one of the key figures in Marsannay’s modern renaissance, Pataille has helped elevate this once-overlooked appellation to serious Burgundy-lovers’ territory.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 En Clemengeots shows a bright, translucent ruby hue with a youthful violet rim. The nose is lifted and pure, opening with wild raspberry, red cherry and cranberry, followed by rose petals, blood orange zest, subtle spice, and a chalky, stony undertone that speaks clearly of its origin. On the palate, the wine is vibrant and energetic, with sleek Pinot Noir fruit framed by fine, powdery tannins and a line of mouthwatering acidity. Flavours of crunchy red berries, pomegranate and sour cherry are layered with hints of dried herbs, white pepper, and a gentle, savory edge. The finish is long, saline and precise rather than heavy, making this a wine that emphasizes finesse and drinkability. While already approachable in its youth, it will gain further complexity and harmony over the next 5–8 years, rewarding those with a bit of patience.

Production
En Clemengeots is a single vineyard in Marsannay, at the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits, where the cool climate and limestone-rich soils give Pinot Noir its tension and minerality. Sylvain Pataille farms his parcels organically and largely biodynamically, with low yields and meticulous work in the vines to ensure ripe but balanced fruit. Harvest is done by hand, with strict sorting to retain only the healthiest bunches. In the cellar, Pataille favors a gentle, minimalist approach: partial whole-cluster fermentation, native yeasts, and a careful extraction to preserve fragrance and finesse rather than power. The wine is then aged in Burgundy barrels (with a restrained use of new oak) to round the edges while keeping the vineyard’s character front and center.

Food & Serving
This Marsannay is very food-friendly and shines with dishes that echo its elegance and freshness. Think roast chicken with herbs, duck breast, veal chops, or pork tenderloin, as well as mushroom-based dishes, charcuterie, and semi-hard cheeses like Comté or Tomme. It is best served slightly cool, at 14–16°C (57–61°F). A light decant of 30 minutes can help the aromatics open up, especially in its first few years, but an oversized Burgundy glass will do much of the work in the glass.

Producer
Sylvain Pataille is one of the defining growers of Marsannay, and a benchmark name for those seeking characterful, terroir-expressive Burgundy outside the headline villages. Based in Marsannay-la-Côte, he started his domaine in the late 1990s and has steadily built a reputation for precise, honest wines rooted in careful organic farming and thoughtful, low-intervention winemaking. Pataille has been instrumental in showcasing the diverse terroirs of Marsannay—through a range of lieu-dit bottlings like En Clemengeots—and in demonstrating that this northern appellation can produce wines of real depth, finesse, and aging potential. His work has helped reposition Marsannay as one of Burgundy’s most exciting sources of value and authenticity.
