Description
Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Clos du Roy 2023 is a refined, terroir-driven Pinot Noir from one of Marsannay’s most prized climats. This cuvée captures the precision and energy that have made Pataille a benchmark producer in the northern reaches of the Côte de Nuits. In 2023, ripe fruit, vibrant acidity and fine, chalky structure come together in a wine that is both immediately charming and built for cellaring. Clos du Roy is known for delivering a particularly elegant yet structured expression of Marsannay, and Pataille’s hand-crafted approach highlights its mineral depth and aromatic purity. Long considered one of the appellation’s top sites, it has been central to Marsannay’s rise from insider secret to serious Burgundy destination.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Clos du Roy shows a luminous, deep ruby color with youthful purple highlights at the rim. The appearance is vibrant and clear, hinting at both concentration and freshness.
The nose opens with pure red cherry, wild raspberry and crushed strawberry, followed by notes of rose petals, violets and a gentle, savory edge of dried herbs and forest floor. Subtle hints of blood orange zest, graphite and delicate spice from élevage add layers without ever dominating the fruit.
On the palate, this is finely etched and precise, with silky but present tannins framing a core of red and blue berries. There is a cool, stony undercurrent that speaks clearly of Clos du Roy’s limestone-rich soils, balanced by a juiciness that reflects the warmth of the 2023 vintage. The finish is long, lifted and mineral, with lingering notes of cherry skin, subtle spice and floral tones. While already approachable in its youth, the structure and acidity suggest an aging potential of 8–12 years, during which the wine will gain complexity, savory nuances and a more velvety texture.
Production
Clos du Roy is one of the standout lieux-dits of Marsannay, sitting on well-drained, limestone-rich soils with varying layers of clay that bring both finesse and depth to Pinot Nero. The cooler, northerly position of Marsannay at the top of the Côte de Nuits gives extra tension and freshness, even in warmer vintages like 2023. Sylvain Pataille farms his parcels organically (and with strong biodynamic influence), working with low yields and meticulous vineyard care to ensure optimal ripeness and healthy fruit. Harvest is carried out by hand, with careful sorting in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification typically involves a significant proportion of whole clusters, encouraging aromatic lift, fine-grained tannins and a sense of vibrancy. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, and élevage is usually in mostly used French oak barrels, with very limited new wood, to preserve the clarity of fruit and terroir expression. The wine is bottled with minimal intervention to retain purity and precision.
Food & Serving
This Marsannay Clos du Roy is a versatile yet sophisticated partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with roast chicken, duck breast, veal, pork tenderloin and dishes featuring wild mushrooms or root vegetables. It also works well with delicate game birds, charcuterie, and semi-soft cheeses such as Comté, Tomme or mild washed-rind cheeses. For optimal enjoyment, serve at 14–16°C (57–61°F). In its youth, decanting for 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the aromatics to unfurl and the tannins to soften slightly; as it develops with age, a gentler, shorter decant or simply opening the bottle ahead of time will suffice.
Producer
Sylvain Pataille is widely regarded as one of the leading figures in Marsannay and a key voice in the broader story of Bourgogne’s northern Côte de Nuits. Based in Marsannay-la-Côte, he began his domaine in the late 1990s with just a few hectares and has steadily built a reputation for meticulous, terroir-focused wines that punch well above their appellation. Pataille farms organically and leans strongly into biodynamic practices, with an emphasis on low yields, careful canopy management and minimal intervention in the cellar. His work has been instrumental in showcasing the quality potential of Marsannay’s climats—such as Clos du Roy—and has helped elevate the appellation’s status among Burgundy collectors and sommeliers alike. Today, wines from Sylvain Pataille are sought after for their purity, energy and transparent expression of place.
