Description

Stephane Regnault Champagne Grand Cru Oger Lydien N99 Extra Brut is a precise, mineral-driven Blanc de Blancs crafted from 100% Chardonnay grown in the famed Grand Cru village of Oger. This is grower Champagne with a decidedly artisanal touch: low dosage, long lees aging, and a laser focus on expressing terroir over sugar and gloss. Named “Lydien N99” after a musical mode and the parcel’s orientation, it reflects Regnault’s unique, almost ‘vinyl-like’ approach to Champagne—pure, detailed, and deeply evocative of place. The wine’s unique selling point lies in its combination of Grand Cru fruit, extra-brut style, and a highly terroir-focused, low-intervention approach. It stands out for its chalk-drenched minerality, tension, and textural finesse, all framed by the natural elegance of Côte des Blancs Chardonnay. Though Stephane Regnault is a relatively new name in Champagne, he is already considered one of the most exciting grower-producers in the region, joining the vanguard that has transformed Champagne from a brand-driven category into a terroir-driven fine wine destination.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the Oger Lydien N99 shows a pale lemon-gold color with fine, persistent bubbles that form a delicate, creamy mousse. The visual impression is one of freshness and precision, hinting at both its purity and its time on lees. The nose is beautifully expressive yet refined: layers of lemon zest, crisp green apple, and white peach mingle with chalk dust, crushed seashells, and a subtle floral note of acacia and white blossom. With a little air, more complex nuances emerge—fresh brioche, hazelnut, and a faint hint of salted butter and flint, all underscoring the wine’s Grand Cru origin. On the palate, this Extra Brut is taut and racy, with a fine, linear structure that glides across the tongue. Bright citrus (lime, lemon, and grapefruit pith) is wrapped around a core of ripe orchard fruit, while the hallmark chalky minerality of Oger provides a mouthwatering, almost saline backbone. The dosage is very low, allowing the wine’s natural fruit, acidity and texture to shine without sweetness. The finish is long, bone-dry and precise, leaving lingering notes of citrus peel, crushed stone, and a delicate, nutty complexity from extended lees contact. While already compelling on release, this Champagne has the structure and acidity to age gracefully for 5–8 years, gaining more creaminess, brioche and hazelnut tones over time.

Production
The Lydien N99 cuvée is sourced from Grand Cru vineyards in Oger, in the heart of the Côte des Blancs—an area renowned for its pure chalk subsoils and its ability to produce some of the most refined Chardonnay in Champagne. The vines here dig deep into chalk and limestone, bringing intense minerality and natural tension to the fruit, while the cool climate preserves acidity and aromatic finesse. Harvest is typically done by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure that only pristine, optimally ripe grapes make it into the press. In the cellar, Stephane Regnault works with a minimal-intervention philosophy: gentle pressing, native yeasts whenever possible, and fermentation often in a combination of stainless steel and neutral oak to build texture without masking terroir. The wine is aged extensively on its lees before disgorgement, with a very low dosage to produce an Extra Brut style that transparently reflects the Grand Cru character of Oger.

Food & Serving
This Champagne’s tension, minerality and precision make it a superb partner for refined, delicately flavored dishes. It pairs beautifully with oysters, scallop crudo, sashimi, and caviar, as well as simply prepared white fish, turbot with beurre blanc, or langoustines. Its chalky profile also works wonderfully with soft, bloomy-rind cheeses like Brie or Chaource, and it can be an elegant match for light poultry dishes with citrus or cream-based sauces. Serve well-chilled, ideally at 8–10°C (46–50°F), in a good white-wine or tulip-shaped Champagne glass to allow the aromas to unfold. A brief 10–15 minutes in the glass is usually enough to open it up; decanting is not strictly necessary, but gently pouring into a carafe for particularly young bottles can help release the wine’s full aromatic complexity.

Producer
Stephane Regnault is part of the dynamic new generation of grower-producers reshaping the landscape of Champagne. Based in the Côte des Blancs, he focuses on Chardonnay from prestigious villages like Oger and surrounding Grand Crus, working with a meticulous, vineyard-first philosophy. Coming from a background that blends both science and a deep passion for music, Regnault names his cuvées after musical modes and reference points, reflecting his belief that great Champagne, like great music, is about harmony, rhythm, and nuance. Though still relatively young as a domaine, Stephane Regnault Champagne has quickly gained recognition among sommeliers and collectors for its precision, terroir transparency, and artisanal approach, securing its place as one of the most promising names in contemporary grower Champagne.
