Description
Spottswoode Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 is the benchmark for what a “second wine” can be from one of Napa Valley’s most respected estates. Crafted predominantly from estate fruit, it delivers much of the character and pedigree of Spottswoode’s flagship Cabernet at a more accessible level. The 2015 vintage, from a low-yielding but highly acclaimed year in Napa, brings intensity, purity, and a polished sense of place to every glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2015 Lyndenhurst shows a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with bold, inviting aromas of black cherries, mulberries, and ripe, warm plums, layered with classic cassis, fragrant earth, and a touch of unsmoked cigar tobacco. Subtle notes of menthol, bay leaf, and sweet baking spice (allspice) add complexity and intrigue as it unfolds in the glass.
On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Cabernet with a graceful, almost dancing quality to the dark fruit. Juicy blackcurrant and black cherry are framed by supple, well-integrated tannins and a vibrant line of acidity that keeps the wine lifted rather than heavy. Earthy undertones, gentle spice, and a hint of tobacco carry through to a long, savory finish. While already approachable and giving, the structure and balance suggest a solid aging potential of 8–12 years from vintage, rewarding cellaring with added nuance and softness.
Production
The Lyndenhurst 2015 is sourced largely from the organically farmed Spottswoode Estate vineyard in St. Helena, along with carefully selected Napa Valley growers who share the same exacting standards. The warm, sunny days and cool evenings of this part of Napa create ideal conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon, delivering ripe, concentrated fruit with natural freshness. The blend is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (around 80%), complemented by 12% Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot to enhance aromatic lift, texture, and structure. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, sorted meticulously, and fermented in temperature-controlled vessels to preserve purity of fruit. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant portion new, allowing it to gain polish, complexity, and integration without overwhelming the varietal character.
Food & Serving
This 2015 Lyndenhurst Cabernet is a versatile partner at the table, shining alongside grilled ribeye, roast lamb, short ribs, or a classic pepper-crusted steak. It also pairs beautifully with richer dishes like mushroom risotto, roasted root vegetables, or aged hard cheeses such as Comté, cheddar, or Parmigiano-Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for ideal balance of fruit and structure. Decanting for 45–60 minutes before serving helps open up the aromatics and soften the tannins, especially if enjoyed on the younger side of its drinking window.
Producer
Spottswoode Estate, located in St. Helena in the heart of Napa Valley, is one of California’s most esteemed family-owned wine producers. Founded in the late 19th century and revitalized by the Novak family in the 1970s, Spottswoode has become synonymous with elegant, vineyard-driven Cabernet Sauvignon. A pioneer in organic farming in Napa (certified organic since the early 1990s), the estate is celebrated for its unwavering commitment to sustainability and quality. Spottswoode’s flagship Cabernet is consistently among the most highly rated wines in the region, and Lyndenhurst was created as a second wine that still fully reflects the estate’s terroir, philosophy, and meticulous craftsmanship.
