Description
Sottimano Langhe Nebbiolo 2020 offers a pure, elegant expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most respected artisan producers. Crafted from younger vines in top crus and handled with the same care as the estate’s Barbaresco wines, it delivers serious complexity at a remarkably approachable level. This wine bridges the gap between everyday pleasure and collectible Piedmont, showcasing the finesse and perfume that make Nebbiolo so compelling.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo shows a luminous, transparent ruby with garnet highlights at the rim, reflecting its classic Piedmontese character. The nose opens with vivid red cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate, followed by rose petals, violet, blood orange zest and a gentle spice note of anise, white pepper and dried herbs. Subtle hints of cedar, tea leaf and earthy minerality add depth without ever feeling heavy.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, precise and beautifully balanced, with juicy red fruit at the core and the fine, chalky tannins that are the hallmark of great Nebbiolo. Flavors of sour cherry, raspberry and red currant mingle with notes of dried roses, tobacco leaf and a savory, almost saline finish. The 2020 vintage brings a touch of softness and approachability, yet there is enough structure and acidity to support 5–8 years of cellaring. Enjoyable now with a short decant, it will gain further complexity and silkiness with a few more years in bottle.
Production
The grapes for Sottimano’s Langhe Nebbiolo come primarily from younger vines in some of the estate’s Barbaresco crus around Neive, planted on calcareous clay and sandy marl soils that give finesse, aromatics and a distinct mineral backbone. Farming is organic and low-intervention, with hand-harvesting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are selected. In the cellar, fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts and a long maceration on the skins to gently extract color, aroma and fine-grained tannins. The wine is then aged in French oak barriques, mostly used, for around a year to preserve purity of fruit and floral lift, followed by additional time in bottle before release, with no fining or filtration.
Food & Serving
This Langhe Nebbiolo is a flexible food wine that shines alongside classic Piemontese dishes such as tajarin with ragù, vitello tonnato, brasato al Barolo and mushroom or truffle risottos. It also pairs beautifully with roasted poultry, pork loin, grilled lamb chops, charcuterie, aged cheeses (Parmigiano Reggiano, Pecorino, mature Tomme) and earthy vegetable dishes like roasted root vegetables or wild mushroom tart. Serve at 16–18°C in a Burgundy-style glass to highlight its aromatics. A 30–60 minute decant is recommended in its youth to allow the tannins to soften and the floral, spicy nuances to fully unfurl.
Producer
Sottimano is a family-run estate in Neive, in the heart of Barbaresco, renowned for its meticulous, vineyard-driven approach and its ability to produce Nebbiolo of remarkable finesse and depth. Founded in the 1970s by Rino Sottimano and now led by the next generation, the estate has steadily become one of the region’s benchmarks, thanks to organic farming, low yields and an unwavering commitment to expressing individual crus. Their Barbaresco bottlings from sites such as Currà, Pajoré and Cottà are widely acclaimed, and the Langhe Nebbiolo benefits directly from this philosophy, often sourced from the same prized vineyards. Consistently praised by international critics, Sottimano is considered one of the key modern interpreters of Barbaresco, combining traditional methods with precise, thoughtful winemaking.
