Description
Sordo Giovanni Barolo Monprivato 2020 comes from one of Barolo’s most revered crus, the famed Monprivato vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. This is a classic, traditionally crafted Nebbiolo that captures the elegance, perfume and structure that have made this hillside among the most sought-after in Piemonte. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, it offers a refined expression of terroir with the promise of graceful evolution in bottle.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with brick-red hues at the rim, typical of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose is immediately expressive, with lifted aromas of dried roses and violets, red cherries, wild strawberries and blood orange, layered with notes of anise, licorice, dried herbs, cedar and a subtle earthy, tarry undertone.
On the palate, the wine is precise and firmly structured, with fine yet authoritative tannins wrapped around a core of red fruit—maraschino cherry, raspberry and pomegranate—complemented by hints of balsamic, tobacco leaf and sweet spice. There is a refined minerality and vibrant acidity that carry the flavors through a long, savory finish. Still youthful and energetic, this 2020 has the backbone to age beautifully for 12–18 years from vintage in a good cellar, gradually developing more truffle, leather and forest-floor complexity over time.
Production
Monprivato is a prized south to south-west facing slope in Castiglione Falletto, where calcareous marls mixed with clay and sandstone give Nebbiolo both aromatic finesse and firm structure. The vines benefit from excellent exposure and significant diurnal temperature shifts, helping to preserve acidity and build complexity in the grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand, with careful selection of bunches directly in the vineyard to ensure only perfectly ripe fruit is brought to the cellar. Following a gentle crushing, fermentation traditionally takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aromatic depth. The wine is then aged in large Slavonian oak botti for an extended period, allowing slow, graceful integration of tannins and the development of classic Barolo nuances without overt new oak influence, before being bottled and rested further prior to release.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is an outstanding match for rich Piedmontese dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb and game, as well as truffle risotto, tajarin with butter and sage, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth helps open up the bouquet and soften the tannins; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decant to separate the wine from any sediment while preserving its more delicate, tertiary aromas.
Producer
Sordo Giovanni is a historic, family-run estate based in the heart of Barolo, with deep roots in the region and a long-standing commitment to traditional winemaking. Known for its extensive holdings in some of Barolo’s finest crus, the winery has become a reference point for those seeking authentic, terroir-driven expressions of Nebbiolo. Over generations, the Sordo family has focused on classic, long-lived Barolo made in the old Piedmontese style—long macerations, large neutral oak and patient aging—earning respect among collectors and sommeliers for producing wines that speak clearly of their vineyards and vintage rather than cellar fashion. The Monprivato bottling stands as one of the estate’s most prestigious expressions, highlighting their ability to capture the nuance of a truly great site.
