Description
Solitude Cornelia Constanza 2007 in double magnum (3 L) is a lavish, old-vine Grenache from the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in France’s Southern Rhône. This is a rich, hedonistic red that still manages to stay poised and pure, even at its most opulent. Bottled in a large-format 3 L, it’s made for sharing on special occasions and for those who truly appreciate benchmark Grenache.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2007 Cornelia Constanza shows a deep garnet core with bricking at the rim, reflecting its maturity while still holding impressive concentration. The nose is intensely perfumed and layered, overflowing with ripe blackcurrant and raspberry compote, black cherry, sweet licorice, roasted Provençal herbs, and warm notes of cocoa and baking spices.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, velvety and mouth-filling, with a decadent richness that remains beautifully balanced. The fruit is plush and generous—dark berries and red fruits wrapped in notes of garrigue, anise, and a subtle touch of dark chocolate. Tannins are fine-grained and resolved, giving a seamless, caressing texture, while a core of freshness keeps the wine from ever feeling heavy. From a superb Rhône vintage and preserved in double magnum, it is in a wonderful drinking window now but can continue to evolve gracefully, especially in this format, for several more years.
Production
Cornelia Constanza is sourced from some of Domaine de la Solitude’s prime Grenache parcels in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where old vines sink their roots into classic Rhône terroir—sun-baked galets roulés (large rolled stones), sandy and clay-limestone soils, and a mistral-swept landscape that ensures healthy, concentrated fruit. The grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and typically partly destemmed to balance richness with finesse. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats to preserve aromatic purity, followed by aging in a combination of large old foudres and/or neutral vessels to allow the wine’s Grenache character and terroir to shine without excessive oak imprint, before being bottled in large-format double magnums for extended, slow development.
Food & Serving
This monumental Châteauneuf-du-Pape calls for equally generous cuisine: think roast leg of lamb with rosemary, braised beef daube Provençale, venison or wild game birds, truffle-infused dishes, and rich stews or ragùs. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and mushroom-based dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C; given both the vintage and the 3 L format, decant for at least 1–2 hours to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its layers of fruit, garrigue and spice.
Producer
Domaine de la Solitude is one of the historic estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, owned for centuries by the Lançon family, whose roots in the region trace back to the 17th century. The domaine has long been recognized as a benchmark producer, helping to shape the reputation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape for richly textured yet balanced wines. Drawing on old vines, exceptional terroir and a thoughtful blend of tradition and modern precision in the cellar, Solitude has earned a loyal following among Rhône enthusiasts and critics alike, with cuvées such as Cornelia Constanza showcasing just how profound pure Grenache from this appellation can be.
