Description

Sociando-Mallet 2011 is a classic Haut-Médoc red that offers excellent value for lovers of structured Bordeaux with real character. Known for its Cabernet Sauvignon-led backbone and polished old-school style, it reflects the estate’s long-standing reputation for producing wines of finesse, depth, and age-worthiness. While not classified, Sociando-Mallet has earned a loyal following for consistently punching above its weight in Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2011 vintage typically shows a deep ruby colour with some evolution at the rim. The nose leans toward blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, and subtle earthy notes, with a touch of spice and dark plum adding complexity. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with firm but well-integrated tannins, fresh acidity, and a classic mineral edge that keeps the wine focused. Flavours of cassis, blackberry, cigar box, and savoury earth unfold gradually, leading to a long, refined finish. This is a wine that can be enjoyed now with air, but it also has the structure to develop further over the next several years.

Production
Sociando-Mallet is located in the northern part of the Haut-Médoc, where gravelly and clay-limestone soils help shape the wine’s freshness, structure, and precision. The estate is known for traditional vineyard work and careful harvesting, with a focus on preserving balance and purity in the fruit. Vinification is carried out with an emphasis on extraction control and classic Bordeaux élevage, typically maturing in oak to build texture and complexity without overwhelming the wine’s natural expression.

Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, entrecôte, beef dishes, game, duck breast, and mushroom-based recipes. It also works well with hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended, especially if opening now, to help the wine open up and soften its tannins.

Producer
Sociando-Mallet is a respected estate in the Haut-Médoc that has built its reputation outside the official Bordeaux classification system, yet is often regarded as one of the region’s most reliable quality producers. Over the years, it has become known for producing wines with a distinctly traditional Médoc profile: structured, age-worthy, and impressively consistent. Its strong reputation among Bordeaux enthusiasts makes it a standout name for those seeking serious wine without the classified-growth price tag.
