Description

Sine Qua Non Syrah Five Shooter 2010 is one of California’s most sought-after cult reds, crafted in tiny quantities by the legendary Manfred Krankl. Built on a Rhône-inspired blend led by Syrah, it combines power, complexity, and remarkable detail in a style that has helped make SQN one of the most admired producers in the United States.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, насыщенный dark-ruby to inky purple color that hints at its concentration. The nose is lavish and layered, unfolding cassis, blackberry, white chocolate, underbrush, and cracked pepper, with subtle floral and spice accents from the small amounts of Roussanne and Viognier. The palate is full-bodied and intensely structured, with masses of fine tannins wrapped around dense black fruit, savory earth, and peppery Rhône character. Despite its size, the wine remains remarkably balanced and expressive, with the depth to age for decades; if opened young, decanting is strongly recommended to let it fully open.

Production
Sine Qua Non is based in Ventura County, just north of Los Angeles, with most of its vineyards in Santa Barbara County, where warm Californian conditions are tempered by coastal influence and allow Rhône varieties to ripen with intensity and freshness. The 2010 Five Shooter is a blend of 85% Syrah, 5% Grenache, 3% Petite Sirah, 5% Roussanne, and 2% Viognier, fermented with 20% whole clusters and matured for 22 months in 59% new French oak, a vinification style that adds structure, spice, and textural richness.

Food & Serving
This is a wine for richly flavored dishes such as grilled lamb, braised short ribs, pepper-crusted beef, venison, or slow-cooked game, as well as mushroom-based dishes with deep umami. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking now to soften the tannins and reveal the wine’s full aromatic range.

Producer
Founded in 1994 by Austrian-born winemaker Manfred Krankl and his wife Elaine, Sine Qua Non began with a tiny production of Syrah called Queen of Spades and quickly became a benchmark cult producer. Known for its ultra-limited releases, Rhône-style blends, and hand-designed labels, the winery has earned international acclaim and a devoted following, becoming one of California’s most iconic names in fine wine.
